Yes… the last article was indeed 10 months ago… sorry…

But the field trip series and ‘D.I.Y. Repair’ articles have been very popular! Today we’ll be looking at assembly, but first lets do some quick revision!

005

Let’s head to the production line!

But before that, let me just mention that the ‘Field Trip’ series actually goes between a number of factories – it’s not all from just one! The basic procedures are the same at all of them, but each factory has slight differences depending on the products they are working on.

007

Senjougahara’s stationery!

As I mentioned in a previous article, all the stationery falling from Senjougahara’s skirt is made piece by piece, and then put together by hand!

001

They are all adjusted to the same angle!

The three strange looking mountain things in the middle are in fact used to make sure that the angle is correct on each part. The one of the left is for the triangle, the middle for the eraser and the right for the craft knife! The toothpicks you can see are used for applying glue and small adjustments – just like at Good Smile’s main offices!!

002

It’s this part here on Senjougahara!

It’s quite amazing to think how much work goes into such a small area – every single figure has this area (and many more) done by hand! There have been tens of thousands of this figure sold worldwide, so that means that those little pieces have been carefully put together tens of thousands of times!

003

The little stationery is just incredible!!

Here they are connecting the stapler and pen together. The pen is so small it’s even hard to hold, let alone carefully glue onto an equally tiny stapler! Plus the parts have all been carefully painted, so you don’t want to mess up any parts that have all been so carefully painted!

006

Clearing dust away with a little duster!

Senjougahara has lots of clear parts around the stationery where dust really shows up, so they need to be dusted down. When you think of mass production you often think of tons of machinery, but that’s not always the case!

023

The factory worker’s cafeteria!

It’s lunchtime! The factory has a little cafeteria like this! I wanted to eat with them, but was told I couldn’t because I was a guest… 🙁

015

A Nendoroid Petite’s arm part!

The arms are being connected to the sleeves as nearly as possible! Nendo Petites tend to have a lot of little parts, so they’re quite a lot of work for the factory workers. I think the number of sleeves you can see on the left is a good example alone of how much work it must be!!

016

The complete parts all neatly lined up!

All the parts are lined up carefully so they they don’t touch each other and scratch off the paint from each other. It also makes counting such tiny parts much easier!

009

Putting the face and head together!

This is also done one-by-one all by hand! If the temperature is too low the PVC will shrink which will cause the assembly to be much more work, so the assembly is done under a warm light to make it easier.

008

Some film to stop paint from rubbing off!

Sorry the picture is a little bit out of focus… I’m sure we’ve all opened a figure before and found some of the paint has been scratched off or a line of paint is in the wrong place… nobody likes to see that on their figures! In the photo above, the film is wrapped around the expression to make sure that the color of the hair does not rub off onto it.

Those of you who have bought figures in the past will know that this film is found all over the figure when you first take it out of the box. To be honest, before I joined GSC I always thought it was just a nuisance to have to remove the film each time I bought a figure… but now I realize just how important it is to keep the figure in the shape it should be! I’m now very glad to see it on the figures as I know that the factory workers have been working hard to get the product to us in the best possible condition!

010

A Nendo Petite prop!

This little block is designed to make sure that the prop is not warped in any way, and will fit the product correctly. You can see the parts number written at the bottom of the block. Obviously this stand varies between products… but these Nendoroid Petite props must have been made tens of thousands of times!!

025

Samples placed along the production line!

This is a sheet of samples for Nendo Petite props and bases. It’s placed all along the line to make sure none of the factory worker’s lose track of what parts they are working with. If you look three pictures up, you can also see the sample if Ricchan’s head is stuck up for workers to confirm!

011

Rin-chan’s drums!

These are also placed into the blister packs carefully by hand! And then…

012
013

They are placed with the stand in bags!

Ah-hah! Now you can see just why the samples are needed – else you wouldn’t know which prop to put into the bag! I have to say again that the workers are incredibly quick at what they do! I guess they need to keep up a good pace so things don’t fall off later down in the production line.

014

They are then sealed with a machine!

The red machine in the middle of the photo seals the bag closed with heat. The worker with the GSC face then makes sure that none of the parts are missing from each bag. They check everything so carefully!! ((((;゜Д゜))))

026

A new production line for packing boxes!

Here the assembled Nendo Petites are all packaged and placed in boxes… I think we’re reaching the end of the process now!

027

The info booklet is added, and sealed in!

Gakkun from the production team is on the left here! He’s making sure that each of the final products is coming out as they should! Gakkun is very strict when he checks the products… a lot of the factory workers looked very nervous when he was around… which made me feel just as nervous! 😛

017

Finally, each box is weighed!

This is a final check that no parts are missing from each of the boxed products.

020

They are then all placed in a big box!

Nendo Petites generally come in a box of 12, but it would be rather disappointing if the box was fulled with all of the same character. To make sure each box of 12 has a good balance of characters, a box filled with all of the same character is sent through like this first, and then the boxes of 12 are organized afterwards. Once the boxes are sealed there is no way of telling what character is in which box, so they need to be very careful to label everything correctly!

024

Mission Accomplished!

Now after their long, long journey, the figures can be sent to Japan! Figure sculptors are incredible artists, but just as they are artists, the factory workers that mass produce the figures are artisans! Obviously each figure is considerably different, but in the end, all of them go through an incredible amount of work and love before they reach us! If I get another chance to visit China, I’ll be happy to visit again… I would even want to try my own hand at putting the figures together! 😛

018

Bonus Photos!

In the factory this panel was stuck up, showing the factory worker’s how boxes should be carried! It’s surprisingly easy to understand too!

019

A list of things that are not allowed!

Food of course is not allowed, but it looks like liquids are also no good! I guess it would be quite bad if some of the liquid somehow got sealed in with some products… ^^;

021

The Chinese streets!

I was brought here by car, and seeing all the stores along the street was very interesting! In the evening there were also lots of people walking about the streets. The air was a bit drier than I was used too, but not to an uncomfortable degree – I really enjoyed my stay in fact!

022

And the food was wonderful!

This picture is in fact a turtle dish! 😛
When in Rome act like the Romans! I decided I had to try some authentic Chinese food while I was visiting! I’m sure everyone will have different opinions, but personally I really liked the crab and yamcha tea. The mantis shrimp was absolutely huge – as big as the spiny lobster’s back in Japan! (I ate two of them! :P) I’m told that in China, meals are taken very seriously and it’s very common to have big meals with as many people as possible together.

And then the tea!! At one of the factories we were given some tea and it was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed sipping it down so much!

Finally… I have to say that I really enjoyed putting these reports together! If there are any requests for similar reports in the future, let me know by mail!

Anyway, that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!! (・∀・)ノ゛

Good Smile Company’s 2012 New Year Cards!

2012 has come to Good Smile!!

11

This year around the public holidays bashed into the New Year a bit leaving quite a few people with a very short break… but I hope everyone enjoyed the new year nonetheless!

I enjoyed some delicious New Year food and ate loads of ‘omochi’ rice cakes! But we started work here at Good Smile on the 5th once again… if only we could keep that New Years feeling going on for the whole year!

There are 37 days till Wonder Festival!

That’s just 24 working days!

To everyone in the industry… this is like a death countdown! xD Good luck to all the figure companies and sculptors!
22

Today’s blog might seem like nothing but publicity… but I hope you’ll give it a read!

Good Smile’s 2012 New Year cards!!

This year’s cards were designed by the design team boss and Aki!

A New Year Scratch-card!

The gray parts on eyes and mouth are like scratch-cards – the right eye shows your luck for this year, the left eye is either ‘Win’ or ‘Lose’ – it’s a card with a built in reading for the year!

Let’s get to the scratching!

But what exactly do you win if it says you won?

You get to say something on Mikatan Blog!

A rather tiny little prize… but at least it’s something! But don’t worry, the product reviews will be coming this year as per normal!

There are just a few notes for those who won:

(1) Send a mail to the specified e-mail address with the title:
“当たったよ” (I won!). The closing date is the 11th January. (Wed)

(2) Meiri will send you a reply to confirm.

(3) If there are too many entries, the ones used will be selected at random!

(4) You can only send one picture, and the text can only be up to 1000 characters in length. Send that along in the mail.

(5) The winners will be announced on the 16th January!

– The date the post will be upped can’t be specified. Sorry!
– The posts will be placed at the end of each Mikatan blog.
– No erotic stuff allowed. Sorry!

I’ve already received some mail from some of the winners… but I’m very interested to see what the people who are not involved in the hobby industry will send for me to put up on the blog! (There were even some people from a law firm!) They’ll all be up on the blog to see shortly, so look forward to them!

The last article for the year is of course…!

The 2011 Good Smile…

Product Ranking!

This year was GSC’s 10th Anniversary and we put a lot of work into approaching the overseas market as well! So today I’ve split up the rankings into ‘Japan’, ‘Overseas’ and a combined ranking of both!

First we’ll look at the ‘Japan’ and ‘Overseas’ rankings!

If you compare the two you can notice quite a few differences!

The ranking only includes products that have been released in 2011, so products still up for preorder don’t count!

It looks like BRS is popular overseas as well!! (*゚∀゚)=3

I’m pleasantly surprised to see figma BRS2035 at the third place position in the overseas ranking! There are also a couple that didn’t even feature on the Japan ranking, such as 8th place – Nendoroid Ikaros and 23rd place – figma Robocop! All-in-all though, I think we can say it was very much the year of Madoka Magica!

Right, now for the combined rankings!!

First we’ll look at 30th~11th place! We’re looking in reverse this time around!

– Overall Ranking –

30th: figma Rei Ayanami: Plugsuit ver.

12th: Nendoroid Kirino Kousaka
11th: Nendoroid Kuroneko

Of the 20 products here, 15 of them are figma or Nendoroid products!!
They are unparalleled in popularity it seems! But I guess that just goes to show that the scale figures that made it into the ranking must have been impressive to beat some of the Nendoroids and figmas in sales.

– Overall Ranking –

10th: figma BRS2035
9th: Nendoroid Snow Miku: Snow Playtime Edition
 8th: Nendoroid Mami Tomoe

 6th: figma Homura Akemi
5th: Nendoroid Miku Hatsune: Absolute HMO Edition
 4th: Nendoroid Homura Akemi

Nothing but names from Madoka and Miku!! 😛
I’m personally very happy to see the posable Nendoroids – HMO and Snow Miku so high up in the ranking! I hope we’ll see more posable Nendoroids in 2012! (Just my personal hopes, though :P)

Anyway, let’s move onto the top 3!

王冠2 3rd Place 王冠2

Nendoroid Madoka Kaname

We received so much lovely feedback about this one as well! The lovely Nendoroid Madoka takes third place this year!! When I first uploaded a picture on twitter of this Nendo, I remember refreshing the page to see the view count jump up each time – it was incredible! It was a great product, and the included QB was just too cute!

王冠22nd Place王冠2

figma Miku Hatsune: Append ver.

Append Miku takes the 2nd place seat! Even as a figma, she featured gradient painting, clear parts and lovely extras! Also an incredible product overall!

Plus those lovely bare feet!!! (*゚∀゚)=3

王冠21st Place王冠2

Nendoroid Miku Hatsune: Cheerful Ver.

Miku ends 2011 as the best selling product of the year!!

Not to mention that this Cheerful Ver. of Miku was sold to raise funds to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Thank you so much to everyone who purchased her. I hope those in the affected areas are on their way to a full recovery!

Last but not least, let’s get Aki’s opinion on the 2011 Ranking!

00

■ Ranking Trends & General Overview

The figma and Nendoroid series were once again a great success this year, all thanks to all of you.

These two series have been great sellers for four or five years now. To think they started out at a hobby market a few years ago… I think that’s just a great example of how the support of hobby and figure fans have grown. I am so very glad that we work on products from so many different series to bring figures from those series to life for the fans. Looking through the rankings I can once again see Miku’s popularity stands out incredibly this year, along with the popular Madoka Magica series. Over these last few years it’s been more and more common to see the series of a specific year appearing on the top rankings the same year the series is produced – this is mainly because we have started working on figures before series even begin to air, which helps us to complete the long figure making process much faster and release the figures closer to the time the series air.

I think that compared to in the past, figures have gained a much more important role in supporting the series they come from. This is of course all thanks to all the figure fans over the world. One of the most amazing things about this ranking is to see that Nendoroid Miku Hatsune: Cheerful Ver, as a charity product, managed to reach the number one spot in sales this year – the first in an ongoing set of charity figures that is still going strong. Cheerful Miku alone managed to sell over 74000 figures worldwide, allowing us to donate an amazing 740 million yen to help relief efforts. In total this year, the Cheerful project has managed to raise well over 1.5 hundred million yen. A big thank you goes out to all the licensors that allowed their products to be sold as charity products, but even more of a thank you needs to go to everyone who actually purchased the products. It makes me proud to see a charity product selling so well.

We announced the overseas ranking this time around.

I personally found the differences between the Japan ranking and the overseas ranking to be very interesting. The overall ratio of local to overseas purchases increased again this year, but in particular the following products were very popular overseas: Nendoroid Ikaros, figma BRS2035, figma Black Gold Saw, Nendoroid Nymph and figma Strength – in that order. Over 20% of Nendoroid Ikaros’s sales were made overseas, which really shows you that ‘Sora no Otoshimono’ is very popular overseas, particularly over the rest of Asia. We could also tell from the number of units sold that Miku Hatsune, Madoka Magica and Black Rock Shooter are also very popular overseas.

We’re looking over the year of GSC just based on sales rankings here, but 2011 was filled with a lot more than just that for us – it was a year with lots of change for us. Ever since the disaster in March, I tried my best to stay strong and keep busy with work, which lead to the establishment of a GSC Shanghai division, a lovely new cafe in Akihabara as well as another in Taiwan, being a part of the new contents management support company, ‘Hitube’ as well as the creation of ‘Ultra Super Pictures’, a new anime production studio. It has put a lot into place for some great things to happen in the coming year! It’s amazing to have reached the 10th year as a company, and still be surrounded by great, reliable people to work with each and every day.

Another amazing part of the year was of course the 4th Super GT for Good Smile Racing – where they managed to become the champions for the very first time.

2012 marks the start of the next 10 years for Good Smile Company.

We’ve reached the 10 year mark, and it’s been an incredible ride. Now it’s time to start up the next ride, so that the next 10 years can be even better! All the staff here at Good smile are heading into 2012 with a bunch of new ideas and surprises in the works!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year, and I hope that the coming year will be a great one for all of you!

That brings the 2011 product ranking to an end!

I was happy to bring you all loads of figures once again this year! I hope you all enjoyed reading the blog, and I hope to see you all again next year as well!

And with that…
Mikatan Blog 2011 has come to an end!

It’s all over! This year brought a lot of bumps along the way, but we managed to get over all of them! But that’s mostly thanks to everyone’s continued support! Thank you very much to everyone who supported us this year in any way whatsoever!!

The GSC guys are addicted to Vanguard!

I’m serious too – it’s not just for the blog, they really love the card game! 😛 Whenever it’s time for a quick break, they all whip out their decks and start a cardfight!!

I’m afraid I just can’t get the rules right myself… (I only know about it from the anime series.) I hope that one day I can join in as a fellow cardfighter though! 😛

The characters from the popular anime series ‘Cardfight!! Vanguard’ are all joining the Nendoroid series! The set includes the main characters Aichi Sendou and Toshiki Kai, as well as four of the units they summon to their cardfights!

On the left we have Nendoroid Petite Madoka-san, and on the right is the Kyubey included with Nendoroid Madoka. The figures are about 4cm in height, but even so they are incredibly well sculpted and painted!!

Of course as soon as a figure becomes smaller it also means that the painting becomes harder to accomplish neatly, but looking at how well these are done really shows you just what GSC’s staff can do!

005

Aichi Sendou!

The main character of the Cardfight!! Vanguard series, Aichi-kun! He has a bit of shy and unreliable personality, but he’s still a great guy!!! (At least, I think a lot of girls feel that way!)

006

Two of Aichi-kun’s units are also included!

Soul Saber Dragon & Blaster Blade!

The Grade 3 Royal Paradine, ‘Soul Saber Dragon’ as well as the card the connected Aichi-kun to Kai-kun – the Blaster Blade

004

By the way!

Even though it’s so small, it’s still posable!

Just what poses differs between the characters, but at the very least all of their necks and arms are movable! Such tiny figures with careful painting and posability?! GSC must be full of masochists! xD

007

Toshiki Kai-kun!

As you can see, the cool, relaxed character, Kai-kun is also included! Kai-kun is a very strong cardfighter who appears as Aichi-kun’s rival! He really looks great here!

009

Two of Kai-kun’s units are also included!
First up is the Draconic Overlord!

The Grade 3 Dragon card, the Draconic Overlord is really impressive! The card in the background comes from the one who was in charge of this project, Tori Bird-kun!

008

The Blazing Flare Dragon!

I thought it when I saw the Draconic Overlord as well… but these two are so overdone! 😛 Let me remind you that this figure is just 4cm in height! The minute detail on the Gatling gun is incredible! 😛

010

“Ride!!”

Is what they say as they both reveal their cards, and slowly but surely summon stronger units! You can display them just like this as if they were in the middle of a cardfight – plus they’re small enough to fit on a desk easily!

011

I’m sure some of you are wondering about the price…
Each is just 300JPY!

You might think that alone isn’t a bad deal, but how about this as well!
There are also three Vanguard cards to collect with the set!

For each figure you buy, one of three possible cards will be included with the figure! And according to Tori Bird – they are pretty powerful cards as well!! You get a figure as well as a good card for just 300JPY! I honestly think it’s too much of a good deal… but I guess as long as you guys are happy, thats what really counts!!

PERSONA!!

Oooh! It’s a magazine featuring the currently airing Persona 4 anime series! Plus it looks like there could be a figure behind the magazine…

But it can’t be a Good Smile product… Good Smile always keeps their prototype figures in cardboard boxes… I better hurry up and find out what it is!

002

It’s Phat Company’s…
Twin Pack: Teddie & TV!

From the game released in July 2008, which has recently become an anime which is still on the air – Persona 4, comes a figure of the the mysterious creature that lives in an alternate world inside the television – Teddie! He also comes with the CRT TV that features in the opening of the anime series!

Great job, Phat Company! ヽ(゚∀゚)ノ
I know there are tons of fans who have been waiting for some Persona 4 figures! (me included!)
003

This is how they look from the back!

Teddie’s trademark zip around his neck is clearly visible from this side! It doesn’t actually open or anything though. ^^;

The reverse side of the TV also looks great, with that nice retro kind of feeling you expect from an old CRT TV like this one.

004

A closer look at Teddie himself!

Teddie is a mysterious creature that lives in the TV world, he is designed to look like someone wearing a costume. It’s a simple looking design, and yet it has such a wonderfully unique feeling to it!

005

               レY^V^ヽl

If you put him on your desk while you’re working, you can always have him looking up at you like this! It’s so adorable! Size-wise he is just a little bit smaller than a Nendoroid. A nice size to display beside you on a desk – plus it’s the kind of figure that even girls don’t need to be embarrassed to put on display beside them!

006

And here is the TV!

Definitely a crucial part to the Persona 4 experience – a CRT TV set! This red TV appears in the opening of the series, as well as in the alternate TV world. I kind of want to pile lots on top of each other like you see in the anime OP. ^^; It really has a lovely retro feeling with the antenna and dials!

007

You could even use it as an extra part for Nendoroids!

Looks like Kyubey is watching something rather startling… I leave it to your imagination to come up with what he was just watching… 😛 You could even stick something over the black area to have the TV actually showing something!

By the way… having read this far, I’m sure there are a lot of you that are thinking something along the lines of…

I will defeat you this year for sure!!
I can’t believe it’s already the last month of the 2011!

Let’s dash toward the new year like Sonic dashing toward his rings! Today we’ll be continuing the 10th anniversary special post series! There might be a few people who are thinking “Aww, I want a figure review!”, I’m sorry, but sometimes we need to take a break from the figures with something like this – I hope you can still enjoy it!

So everyone…
“What memories stick in your mind the most?”

001

Gakkun, Production Team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

I enjoy working on almost all the products, but let me jump on one project I worked on with another company.

・ native’s Chie
It was a lot of fun! and super sexy! Normally I’m not so involved with native’s figures, but Chieri’s sculpting is so incredible and Ishikei’s original illustration was stunning, so it was really great to work on. I was most satisfied.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Nendoroid Miku Hatsune
This was really a big problem! We had to work on more things than normal, and in a shorter time than normal!
Basically, we had to work four times harder than normal! (Short time: 2x harder, Lots more work: 2x harder. Total: 4x harder!)
In order to get through everything, we had to work with two factories simultaneously on the same figure. It really created a load of tension! I hoped we’d never have to make use of two factories at once again…

・ Nendoroid Miku Hatsune: Support Ver.
The return of the need for multiple factories! We once again worked together with each of the factories, so we could bring back the smiles to everyone a little faster! But this time with a cuter smiling face and cheering parts to boot! We even changed the stand for the new version. The molds in each of the factories were all gathered up and we made a record speed mass production of figures!

・ MXF Ignis
I remember when we first looked at the prototype and everyone was wondering how on earth we would do the hair. Between the twisted sculpting, the finely detailed parts and the need to keep the pose steady looked like a huge headache. Not to mention the paint work thereafter! The twisted patterns on her outfit and the gradient along with that…. and then to top it all off we were gibing the job to a brand new factory! The main reason for that was the use of the latest equipment. The engineers managed to get through all the problems in the end, and get the figure out to all the fans. It’s amazing how much technology has come now though – doing the same thing now in 2011 is pretty much standard work! It’s still tough though!

Gakkun is the superman of the GSC production department! He always assures great quality! Thanks for all the hard work you’ve put in Gakkun!

002

Kiku-chan, Sales Department

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ Selling the first Nendoroid Petite: Haruhi series.
Every single one of them was so adorable! I remember I’d specifically go into the convenience stores just to take a look at them.

・ Taking part in product photos and the figma commercial.
I remember taking part in the commercial for the Aisaka Taiga figure and the figma Haruhi series. I was really nervous and shaking all over, but so many people were there to cheer me on!

・ Working surrounded by figures in a great atmosphere.
Figures are all around wherever you look…
I’m so happy to be able to work in an environment like this every day. Plus there are so many snacks all the time! People bring udon, takoyaki and other treats along all the time! I’m getting fatter just by working here! It’s all this job’s fault! ^^

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ As mentioned by others… WonHobby 9.
Working on the paper-craft for hours, or  using the company car as a taxi during the event. Although looking back on it now, it’s a great memory, even if it was tough at the time. Recently though, the hardest thing for me to deal with is the weird things that N-izumi keeps saying! The sales department really gets along great!

For anyone who thinks you won’t get loads of treats when working at GSC… you’re very wrong! There is always lots to munch on! All the treats are put on a single table, then a mail goes out to everyone to go get some! (Kiku-chan comes by the table fairly often… :P) I guess that’s why I feel fatter ever since I’ve been working here…

003

Miyuki-tan, General Affairs

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ WonFes! TAF! Events where I can meet with everyone!
I normally don’t have much contact with figure lovers, so getting to talk to them at events is a lot of fun. Plus it really makes me happy to see them all smiling!

・ Trying out all sorts of cosplay.
I didn’t think I’d ever dress as a high-school student or Santa after my 20s… but doing so really was a load of fun and a great experience!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Appearing on a live radio broadcast
While I was minding my own business at a Good Smile booth, Aki suddenly told me to take part in a live radio presentation… there was no script or anything and I had to introduce the goods and booth to everyone… I was almost in tears trying to think up what to say!!

・ Konekuri!!
I need not say more…

I don’t think anyone except GSC staff members will get that last one, but it gave me a laugh! A few WonHobby Live Broadcasts back, we were doing a little skit using Nendoroids, and Miyuki-tan was the voice for the act! It was a load of fun!

004

Enon

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ Live Broadcasts.
I started helping out with these not long after I joined GSC, the staff and viewers create such a great atmosphere!

・ Tokushima Business Trip.
Aki-san and I ate so much delicious food, we could hardly move afterwards! We also went on a road-trip from Tokushima to Matsudo.

・ Sitting Next to Mikatan.
You’ve really supported me!

Hey! Those are the same! You cheat!
But I guess it’s true isn’t it! There is often a link between the fun times and the difficult times! You really are the one I know we can trust to run the Live Broadcasts without a hitch!

Not only is he great with helping out physically, but he also drives the staff to create a great show! Unfortunately I don’t work next to him anymore, but I still rely on him all the time!

005

Fuumin, 3D Production Team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ The Mini-car Product Displays
Just as I joined GSC, there were mini-car product displays at WonFes. A few days before it was needed, I created the data to output and printed out the product, which came out great. It was a lot of work, but it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves so much at the event. It’s a great memory for me now.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Wax Printer Breakdown…
Before using the 3D laser printer we used a wax printer. Just as we needed to print out a load of things, the machine broke down… the engineer for the machine was also out on a foreign business trip so it look a while for it to be repaired. It was a really stressful time.

GSC’s irreplaceable 3D team! They really act as the backup to the production team when working on extra parts and stands and whatnot. The picture of Fuumin here is together with the two 3D printers surrounded by boxes. It’s in such a tiny little corner. xD

Fuumin also worked with Yousei Megane to get the GSC Seijin in an iPhone App!

<View the GSC Seijin with Yousei Megane!>
(iPhone (3GS+ compatible)、iPod Touch(with camera) 、iPad2)

1) Download Yousei Meganefrom the AppStore. If you already have it, update to the latest version. (It’s free!)

2) After downloading, start it up! Point your camera to this code and view the GSC Seijin in augmented reality!

This is how it comes out!  Look how cute he is sitting on a shoulder here! 😛
If you’re an iPhone be sure to give it a go! (・∀・)ノ

006

Station, Design Team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ figma Cycle Campaign
I rode my very first road bike from Hanamatsu to Omaezaki. That was only about 50km, but for me at the time it took everything I had. A few days later there was another from Mishima to Ashinoko almost all uphill, and then down an old road to Odawara. I really realized what an interesting company GSC was while doing this – it’s a great memory!

・ Panty & Stocking Cafe
This was the first time I’ve ever been in charge of decorating a cafe. We tried to put things relating to the series all over the place, and it was a great experience for me in the end. There were so many customers that came from far to visit the cafe, which really encouraged me as well!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ The Japan 12-hour Cycling Race
This was my second time entering. It was one week after WonFes.
Even so, I was fully charged and ready to try my very best! It doesn’t matter how expensive a bicycle is, it’s the engine (that is, the person riding it!) that really counts!
008・ Good Smile x Karaoke Tetsujin Cafe
The most I have ever worked since I joined the company. ^^;
Everyday felt like I had run a full marathon. I decided that work should become a whole new kind of sport… one with no end in sight. 😛

When I asked for a picture of Station to put up, I never quite expected one like this, but it’s a great picture! While he is part of the design team, he also does cycling and helps out with the cafes all the time!

011

Shii, Advertising Team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ Being able to work on various things other than web design.
In particular, when I came up with the name for the Soul Gem Drink for the Madoka Cafe.

・ Going to a foreign event and hearing the people all over say they love Nendoroids.
I wasn’t able to speak to them myself, but hearing those words in normal conversation all over made me so happy!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Being so nervous about being in charge of my first event.
I ended up being late… I’ll never forget the trouble I got into for that…

Shii-chan used to be part of the web team, but recently moved over to the advertising team! She works on all sorts of advertising and promotions and has done all sorts of things for GSC! The advertising team is also sometimes referred to as the ‘event team’ nowadays, and working on those events is an unbelievable load of work, but I trust you can do it!

007

Koyamada, Production Team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times

・ Taking part at Mikupa!
Seeing just how many Vocaloid fans there are, and seeing them all in front of me was incredible. Miku is one angel that is really loved!

・ Safely delivering goods and seeing how much people love them!
I’m not involved in the development at all, but I take care of the products while they are sent to the factories and then sent out to all the buyers. I love seeing people taking the figures home with a smile on their faces. I’m like the relative that looks after the children for the parents. 😛

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Delivering Goods!
But delivering the goods to where they need to be is my job, so I always do what ever I can to see them safely delivered!

Koyamada really has a close relationship with all the figures, and I’m happy to be working with her! You always tell me the delivery information as soon as its available, and get me early release samples for reviews!

Memories are what make up people!
We had all kinds of memories again, but that brings part 3 to an end.

Based on the ideas sent in by customers, this is the menu the GSC Cafe and TYPE-MOON came up with in the end!

004

“A Man’s Romance!”

This menu item was thought up by Tawashi! The rice is made to look like Neko Ark!
This was previously seen at the Carnival Phantasm Cafe, but this time is tofu in place of the veggies, and it’s twice as spicy!

It was a little too hot for me just by itself, but mixing in some salad or egg really made it perfect!

For those who don’t think it’s spicy enough, you also get a little bottle of spice to add however much you like! If you’re feeling courageous, try some!

005

“Gáe Bolg!

This one was thought up by Nekosakura, JIN and takemiho1314!
This is Lancer’s weapon made as a hot-dog covered in a salsa sauce! With pickles, lettuce and onion slices, it also makes for quite a healthy meal!

006

“Petite Ahnenerbe!” (Desert)

A menu thought up by Kimagure Gokku!
Syrup-covered anko with fruit that makes use of Hibiki and Chikagi’s image colors! Hibiki is orange, so there are oranges, while Chikagi is red which is anko! Plus the ice cream and blueberry on top!

You can only grab this at the Good Smile Cafe!
Don’t miss out, come along and try it! There is also a light-up Excalibur on display!

008

The job involves making packages, catalogs, pamphlets, adverts and various other printed goods! Here is one quick comment from the Design Team’s Boss:

The three most important things for this job are ability, passion and resolve! We want a reliable comrade to join our team!

The design team’s boss was once my boss as well! He’s a bit strict sometimes, but has a very kind heart! I really respect him and the work he has done! I was really glad when he said to me : “You did really well this year” at the end of last year. ^^

The application period is from 18th November to the 15th December 2011!

That brings the announcements to an end! I hope at least some of them were interesting to you!! There were hardly any figure photos in this article, so I’ll end with this dog model on my desk! 😛

009
It’s a cast figure, not PVC, and is actually one of threeA’s products! That confident upward look is great! And look once again at Kyubey’s front paw! I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – that paw is incredible!! xD

Anyway, that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again next week!! Enjoy the weekend! (・∀・)ノ゛

Good Smile Company’s Memory Corner! (Part 2)

Good Smile’s 10th Year Commemoration Post!

Is moving on to part 2!

         ____
       / \
      / ─ ─ \ ”May 1st was the birthday, so
    / (=・=) (=・=)\ just half a year left till 11 years!”

     \ ` ⌒´ /
     ノ \

So today I’ll continue asking asking the staff,
“What memory sticks in your mind the most?”

001

Nobu, from the production team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Knowing that lots of people know about our products.
When out with someone my wife met at work, I was asked what I do for a living. I replied “I make figures for the company that makes Nendoroids”, and got the reply, “I collect Nendoroids!”. It was great.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Working out the layout of the production team’s space…
There are so many random things!

・ Getting those outside the company to understand Nendoroid specs
Even now this is tough!

GSC releases loads of figures every month, and Nobu-san here calculates the schedule for all that, as well as directing the sculptors that are not part of GSC. We’d also never have had Nendoroids if it wasn’t for him – and now that we’ve seen over 200 of them, I really think we can say with pride that they have grown into a much loved series!

002

Hiro, from the production team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!
(゚д゚) Difficult Times

I’ve worked at various places, but now I’m very content here at Good Smile Company. I’m on the production team, but also been involved in some sculpting, such as the Black Rock Shooter figures.

Whilst I do work on sculpting and painting, I also work on the planning and production teams, making changes here and there. I believe that having everyone work together towards our products really is what brings out the best in them.

But that said, hard times come along all the time. Everyday working into work is kind of like waling into a danger-zone – you never know what is going to come.

I kind of combined by fun time and difficult times into a single sentence…

Yeah… the good and bad things are kind of all mixed together! 😛 The BRS project really was a company-wide project….

Back then I even did an interview with huke-san at a cafe in Akihabara. That was the very first time I met him….

003

Suzuki, from management

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ The fimga cycle campaign, or the di:stage jamboree, or the country-wide tour, or the BRS X’mas campaign, or…
I really can’t say which was my best, but needless to say I’ve had loads of fun being able to go all over the place! I love being able to meet our customers from all over Japan!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ WonHobby News Watch Reporter
It was a tough time, but to be fair it was also a lot of fun as well! I kind of feel that you kind of forced that role onto me. I’m glad we didn’t have NicoDouga back then, otherwise people would still be able to see that…

5 years ago before we had Nico Douga, GSC used to have a half-yearly program! Suzuki-san and I used to be the reporters for the show, running about all over the place – sorry Suzuki-san! You really don’t want to see that old footage… for more reasons than one. ^^;
004

Tsukki, from the production team

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Nendoroid BRS’s Development
It was a very important product to the company, and I really enjoyed putting everything I could into it. The brand new stand, weapons – it was a challenge, but we put everything into it and it came out great in the end. It was also the first product I was in charge of, so it’s definitely a very important memory to me!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ China Business Trip
Once in China I ate some fresh vegetables at a 4-star hotel in China, and spent most of the business trip in a toilet thereafter… I swore to never eat raw fresh vegetables again. 😛

Another time I ordered lemonade in Taiwan. It was here I realized that there were a lot of differences between Taiwan and China. I swore I’d never put ice in lemonade again.

Another person who has a memory regarding BRS! BRS was the first Nendoroid to use the Nendoroid stand we use today!

I know the production team gos to China a lot – take care of yourselves while there!! I have to say that when I went to China I had no problems – the food was delicious! 😛

005

Seki-sama, from General Affairs

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ During the Yuzuko Peppermint project, when we entered a real recording studio and took part!
I always wondered what it was like in the studios where things like Drama CDs were recorded, so it was a lot of fun for me! Although, listening to my own voice recorded there was also quite a painful experience…. orz.

006

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Working on the papercraft Gedächtnis

Making one without color, and another without. Every evening was filled with nothing put cutting and pasting paper all over. Once it was done though, the result was great – so in the end it also turned into a fun thing

That brings back memories! I remember a whole team of girls working night after night in the old office’s meeting room – cutting and pasting things all night long! (Of course, Akiyama-san who had asked them to work on it had also left all sorts of tasty goodies to keep them all going as well :P) I also remember the dubbing at the studio!! It was a great experience as well… although I also can’t stand hearing my own voice… xD

007

Web Team – Saitou (Mikatan)

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Having lots of people read my blog!
This blog originally started as a project that was only supposed to last half a year, but there were so many voices saying, “I love reading your blog” and “I saw your photos so I grabbed the figure”. It made me really happy! To be honest, the constant daily deadline is sometimes tough, but just by hearing that everyone is enjoying the blog – I’m happy to continue it!

・ Everyone Works Hard!

In the toughest of times, even when a prototype breaks or something goes badly – everyone will always be there to reassure you that everything is alright. That anything can be done! It’s great to work with people like that!

・ Taking the Vocaloid Nendo Petites to Akihabara
Wanting to show as many people as possible we took the prototypes through to Akiba. So many people came through to take a look even though it was a weekday.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ The figma #100 incident!
figma #100 was supposed to be announced at WonFes, and I accidentally put it up on the blog a day before WonFes. I know everyone was willing to forgive me, but I just stood in the office bursting into tears when I realized what I had done! 🙁

It wasn’t even a GSC product, but a Max Factory product, so I felt even worse about it… Max Factory just laughed it off and forgave me, but it’ll still leave a scar in my mind forever more…

・ WonHobby Live Broadcast 2!
During the last part, while broadcasting, I ended up crying here as well. I’m glad this wasn’t on Nico Douga yet at that time. 😛 I actually don’t really remember it all that well, but I do know that these are the only two times I’ve actually started crying while at work. 😛

Thanks for all the memories everyone!!
That brings the 2nd memory corner to an end!
We’ll see about a part three next time I can’t get any figures to take a look at!

That’s all for this week!
I hope to see you all again on Monday – have a great weekend!! (・∀・)ノ゛

Good Smile Company’s Memory Corner! (Part 1)

We’re already almost half way through the 10th year of Good Smile Company! Time really flies! And after 10 years, there must be so many wonderful memories among the GSC staff!

Today I’ll be asking the staff:
“What memory sticks in your mind the most?”

001

Aki, Representative Director

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ When the MAX Alloy Genesic GaoGaiGar that cost us more than the company was worth to produce, actually sold well.
I thought I was going to die. Back then, all the GSC and Max Factory products were risks…
・ Going on a company vacation together.
We all jumped on a bus together in a foreign country, and I realized just how much we can accomplish together.
・ Everyday is great fun!
Ten years have gone by, and yet I can hardly remember most of them. I’m surrounded by great friends and family, and could die happy right now!

(゚д゚) Difficult Times!
・ Mostly things I can’t talk about…
Over these 10 years, I’ve caused all sorts of trouble to lots of people.
If I live on long enough, I’ll write an autobiography about it all :P.

The rest of the staff was also very interested to see what Aki had to write about his memories! I get the feeling I should tell him to take care of himself more…

002

Akiyama, General Manager

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Nendoroid Miku’s Sales reaching 100000!
A product that reached the level of the 1/6th scale Kasumi!
・ The 10th Anniversary Party!
What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 10 years of GSC!
・ Miku Z4’s Victory!
The tension and excitement building up to the final race and victory seem to suit GSC so well! 😛

(゚д゚) Difficult Times!
・ WonHobby 9…
Getting everything ready before the event!!

WonHobby 9 was a great event that I think lived up to everyone’s expectations! But it was all thanks to the hard work in the background by people like Akiyama-san, who was running around in an almost traumatic state at the event! As a side note, you have a duck face in your photo! 😛

003

Oda-P, from the Project Team!

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Being loved by those outside the company, the customers!
It’s really encouraging to hear everyone cheer me on – such as at the WonFes booth, or during meetings with other companies. It also really puts on the pressure though..
・ Shuraki’s Akatsuki preorders reaching their limit.
Due to various problems, the first run ended up much larger than intended, but lots of people responded so well to the project – it made me really happy!
・ Sculpting Nendoroid Petite: Hetare Saber
I really loved working on the sculpting for the cute Nendoroid, making use of the pull back as well made it a really fun job.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Nendoroid Neko Ark Project
Just a few weeks after I joined the company – still as a part timer – I was left in charge of planning, details and sculpting. It was a ton of fun, but was also really difficult time for me. There was just no time! 😛
・ Working on the Faces of the Nendo Petite Haruhi Series
Putting on the decals as tests while comparing them to the prototype… it sounds simple, but it took a couple of us an entire night to get it so that the final version would come out as the cute version that it eventually did!
・ Nendoroid Miku’s Alterations and Coloring
The night before the photography was to be done on the figure, I worked on the Hachune fringe and expression. Something really awesome had to be included with such a huge product!

Lots of memories from Oda-P, the man who does both production and planning! 😛
It’s amazing how many of the staff remember the Shuraki and figma start-up period! Come to think of it, the Haruhi Petite Nendos were around that time as well!!

004

Otanaka from the Project Team!

(゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Just after Nendo Petites were released, a novel that came out shortly after mentioned them!
More than a fun thing, it’s more just something that made me really happy. I loved working on the project, so seeing it feature in a book was great. It was just a quick little sentence, but I read it over and over again.

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ Leaving a prototype on a train on the Yamanote Line
When I realized I had left it, I quickly asked for advice from a station attendant. He did as much as he could, but it couldn’t be found at first, and we ended up waiting for the train to go all the way around and back to try and find it. Eventually I managed to get it back without any problems, but when I think about it now, I realize just how distressed I must have been…

I remember the prototype incident! The whole company was in distress!! 😛 I remember when you called to say you got it back and everyone crowded around, “Well? Is it safe? Did you get it?!”
Everyone was so worried… but at least we got it back safely in the end!

006

Kawapon from the Production Team

 (゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Being involved in great products. Plus the midnight Wii Sports tournament!

I threw the controller and broke it..

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ The Shuraki period
It was just difficult for all sorts of reasons. 😛  I’ve attached two pictures from the Shuraki period to prove my point. The reason behind the full-body tights is still unknown.

010

009

Akiyama-san?!
What is with that expression as well!? And the pose? xD

This was about four years ago. I’m glad to see the memories have been stored as photos!

013

Takanon from the Production Team!

 (゚∀゚) Fun Times!

・ Making use of the 3D Printer
My previous job also made use of one, but it was nowhere near as accurate, and it took so much longer. Using the one we have now is really just too fun to explain.
・ Being in charge of the posable Nendoroid’s Sculpting
Working with Oda-P through trial and error to try and get Nendoroids more posable than ever before was a load of fun. One of my goals was to work more with joints and posing, so it was a great time for me!
・ Appearing on The Live WonHobby Broadcast
It was together with others from Nitroplus, Max Watanabe and Takayuki Takeya. We did make-up with a signing pen, and at the end of it all Takeya-san complimented me on knowing way too much. 😛

(゚д゚) Difficult Times

・ WonHobby 9
My first event after joining GSC. From beginning to end I was trying to sort out queues all around Akihabara UDX.
・ When I was late in France
I got into so much trouble. Sorry!
・ Right now.
Right now is one of the most difficult times, but I’m getting ready for the next ‘Fun Time’ as well! I can’t wait to make cuter, more playable figures than ever before!

Takanon! Our resident 3D and specialist, who is just as great at hand sculpting! Even though he is so busy, he is always willing to help out with live broadcasts and blog things! Thanks Takanon! The last two Snow Miku’s were made as a tag team between Takanon and myself! I’m glad to have you working with me!!

Thanks to everyone for their precious memories!
That brings the first Memory Corner to an end – but the next time I can’t find a prototype to get my hands on, I’ll ask some of the other staff as well!

That’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!!  (・∀・)ノ゛

The Good Smile & Karaoke no Tetsujin Cafe

A quick explanation!

Good Smile Company has long been working with animation, games and manga – all of Japan’s popular sub-culture and is now working with the popular Karaoke no Tetsujin who boasts one of the largest number of songs including anime and Vocaloid tunes for all to enjoy. The two companies are working together to bring us a new cafe called the “Good Smile & Karaoke no Tetsujin Cafe”, which will be opening on the 28th October (Friday) in Tokyo, Akihabara.

That really was quite quick, but it sums it up quite nicely!
You can find it just off Chuuou-dooru – the 5th floor of AKIBA CULTURE ZONE!

024

Loads of figures and scrolls lining the walls!

The clean white look makes the place look nice and big and also looks very pretty! It creates such a nice atmosphere, that even makes it easy for girls to walk in!

022

Flowers sent in for the opening!

This was the reception desk, just left of the main entrance! And on the other side of the reception desk was this…

023

A sales corner!

Loads of interesting goods from the cute to the magnificent were all lined up – lots of stuff I really wanted to get my hands on as well! Both GSC figures and theme goods for the cafe are on sale!

025

Alright, time to head inside!

Because today was just the opening reception, none of the chairs and tables are set out, but the space you see here will all become the main area of the cafe! All the latest GSC figures are displayed in the glass cases scattered throughout the area!

027

All sorts of original work lined up as well!

This cafe is going to work in a same fashion to the Good Smile Cafe in Matsudo, following different themes every few months!
Previously it was a Madoka Magica theme, but from December it will be following a “TYPE-MOON cafe for Carnival Phantasm” theme!

026

Many lovely figures to accompany you!

It’s a treat for figure fans, but it’s also an interesting outing for those who have never had much contact with figures – you get to see so many in one place! I can even see a 1/1 scale Neko-Arc staring at me from the left there!!

030

The lovely notebooks for guests!

The notebooks from the Matsudo Madoka cafe were also on display for fun! These notebooks are for any guests to write or draw anything they want! It’s great fun taking a look at what everyone has left behind in the notebooks!

031

The cafe menu was also up to see!

This is the ‘TYPE-MOON cafe for Carnival Phantasm’ menu!
Oooh! Even more things then there were at Matsudo!
I wanna go and try some of these as well! There is also of course a Madoka menu filled with lovely treats as well!

028

You can take a look at some of the upcoming figures!

Fate/Zero Saber!

The name isn’t final though, it might still change. It’s a 1/8th scale figure but it really is an impressive size for that scale! And so detailed!

The same sculptor behind Saber Lily!

She’ll be reviewed on the blog shortly!!

033
Soon to be announced on the GSC site…!

1/8th Scale Mami Tomoe!

I bet lots of you were hoping I had taken the photo at a little lower of an angle…

She is also so incredibly detailed!

034

The event officially begins!

The event was run in two different parts – one aimed at the press and another which was a live NicoNico announcement. Lots of people were attending the press event all taking down notes throughout the presentation…

035

From the left:
Tetsujin’s Hino, Brain’s Network’s Takayama and Good Smile’s Aki!

These are all the big names behind the Good Smile x Karaoke no Tetsujin Cafe!
Akiyama was the one who brought the other two together! Yay!

This Winter there are also plans to open a store in Taipei, Taiwan!
There are also plans to open more stores all over the world from next year onwards! This is becoming a huge thing!!

036

Next up, GSC made an announcement of their next big expansions!!

The creation of Ultra Super Pictures!
To put it simply, a brand new animation studio!

A whole bunch of wonderful companies working together on anime production, including Sanjigen, Oath and Trigger on the animation side and Nitroplus and pixiv working on the scenario team! You can see Nitroplus’ Dejitarou on the left and Sanjigen’s Matsumura on the right – they were also here for this wonderful announcement!

037

And the creation of Hightube!
Put simply, this is a new marketing company!

This is a collaboration between Cospa, Bushiroad and Good Smile. Just hearing those three names together gets me exited!
On the left is Cospa’s Matsunaga and in the middle is Bushiroad’s Kidani!

Don’t tell anyone, but I’m actually a huge fan of Kidani’s! 😛

038

Thus the announcement and opening reception have come to an end!

This is the champagne tower that was shown on the Nico live as well! It took ages to fill all the glasses causing quite some trouble for the host of the show… ^^;

We’re trying all sorts of new ventures in hopes to bring you all even more wonderful things in the future!
I hope you’ll be supporting us along the way!

Another thing I must mention – I know that most of you reading this blog are figure fans, and I assure you you don’t need to worry about the figure side of things changing – they’ll be going ahead as always!! The main staff in Matsudo will still be working hard to make the high quality figures that we all know and love!

Anyways, that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again next week!! (・∀・)ノ゛
