A Look at Nendoroid Packaging!

Just one week until WonFes!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

I have been battered by the cold today… I hope there is no snow next week! Snow during WonFes makes everything so much more difficult! But at least it suits Snow Miku!!

Anyway, today I’m going to write an article a little different to normal! I’m going to be speaking with Enu-shi from the GSC Design team about the ‘Snow Miku’ packages of the past! ♪

His hat always reminds me of the children’s book, ‘The Three Robbers’!

WonFes is just around the corner!
Winter WonFes has often been associated with Snow Miku!

What was the reason behind Nendoroid Snow Miku: Strawberry White Kimono Ver. having such a unique package?

Nendoroid Snow Miku: Strawberry White Kimono Ver. was very different to the previous Snow Mikus as all her parts and outfit were very heavily influenced by Japanese culture. I wanted to try and include that feeling with the packaging! It was also the first item past Nendoroid #300 to have its packaging revealed, which also made me want to do something special and new about it!

I thought up a couple of designs, but ended up with the Japanese-style wrapped gift packaging!

Then there was last year’s Nendoroid Snow Miku: Magical Snow Ver.

This one had a rather large and impressive package too!  (; ・`д・´)

Where did you get the idea for this one?

Well, the product itself came with a really nice book-shaped stand, which made me want to take it a step further and turn the packaging into a book as well! The size wasn’t too much of a problem as things like Racing Miku had been large in the past… but in the end in order to protect the spine section and printing on the front… we needed to add another layer of packaging to protect the packaging!!

I see! So that’s why the book came in a separate cardboard box!

I actually quite like opening up boxes anyway, so this wasn’t a problem for me at all! ♡

The actual package was also made to open up like a book! It was incredible!

Yep! It’s great to work on the outer design of a package, but adding something like this and giving it an inside as well added a whole new aspect of design!

By the way, when we announce products the packaging generally isn’t yet complete – we can only really show it to everyone once the products are ready for sale!  I think that’s a good thing though! It means there is something for the fans to look forward to seeing as a surprise when their figure arrives! It’s a little fun thing about the figure to look forward to!

Nendoroid Snow Miku: Magical Snow Ver.  was the second Snow Miku to have a special package for fans to enjoy, and they were also great fun for me as a designer to try and challenge new things.

Nendoroid Snow Miku Snow Bell Ver.  is going to be revealed on tonight’s live broadcast… do you have any hints for us?

This time around I was focused on the shape!

It’s a little hard to explain in words, but it’s definitely one of my best recent designs. I’m quite happy with how it turned out!

As for a hint… I used a couple of candy boxes for inspiration! Plus, the theme this year was  Winter in Hokkaido, I had to keep that in the design! The colors have a very gentle feeling to them!

I can’t wait to see it!! (`・ω・´)ゞ

I’ll be sure to keep working on interesting ideas so fans don’t get bored! I hope everyone enjoys looking at the packages as much as I enjoy designing them!

But that’s not all! Let’s also take a closer look at the recently released ‘Nendoroid Devil Homura’ packaging!

*Yassan, the figure’s planner hugging wooser while working.

This package features varnished feathers all over the packaging! They have an ever so slight 3D look as if jumping out from the packaging!

The harlequin pattern on the side of the box also gives it a very high class appearance!

Similarly, you might have noticed that Nendoroid Shoyo Hinata has volleyballs on the front of his design!

Be sure to take a close look at your Nendoroid packages! You might find some interesting things! ♪

Hmm? What’s that on Chanshuu-senpai’s desk?!

It’s Nendoroid Kurumi Tokisaki! She’s scheduled to released next month!! <○><○>

(・∀・) “Hoho! You have good eyes, Kahotan!!”

“The clock area around her has a matte texture and looks and feels awesome! Look forward to it!”

I hope everyone is taking a good look at their Nendoroid packages from now on! Don’t miss out on part of the fun… no matter how much you want to open up the figure!

I’m sure there will be various more fun and interesting packages coming up!!

For those sculptor’s that are looking for some advice to improve their works, this is the perfect opportunity! Whether you are a professional or beginner, feel free to apply and ask some questions! ♪

Note that this will activity will require a reservation!

This is because we want to give everyone a fair amount of time to get through their questions! To apply, please see the instructions on this page: http://whl4u.jp/uc/

Please note that you must be able to speak Japanese to take part in this activity!

I have decided to to a little interview with each of the sculptor’s that will be at the event, so you can get a feel for who will be answering your questions! I also asked the planners Hamako and Akane-Eiseihei for their opinions on the sculptor!

Let’s get started!!

YOSHI (Max Factory)

– What made you become a sculptor? –

I took part in the Summer WonFes in 2001 where I first found out about garage kits. That was when I knew my sculptor’s spirit had awakened. I could smell the money! So I decided to jump into the world of sculpting and give it all I had! After deciding that, I quickly left the event hall.

– A word to those who want to participate? –

Whether you’re just doing sculpting as a hobby or you consider yourself a professional, I’m sure you can benefit from taking part – everyone doing sculpting always wants to get better, so take that feeling and let us give you some advice!

☆ Akane Eiseihei Memo ☆

YOSHI! A sculptor who loves five a-side football! He sometimes comes back injured, but his hands are always kept safe… as expected of the ‘sculptor’s spirit’! He works mainly on scale figures with epo putty. He is also a very sociable person, so I’m sure he will be happy to give all sorts of advice!

Shinji Koshinuma (Max Factory)

Sculptor of: figma Saber 2.0

– What made you become a sculptor? –

When I was a child, I found some garage kits at the Kotobukiya store in Tachikawa which is when I first found out about the profession. I decided then and there that I wanted to see my own name of the product packaging one day, and started to go to a special school that specialized in figure sculpting.

The GSC CEO came to give a lecture at the time and offered a chance to come see the GSC offices… one thing led to another and now here I am!

– A word to those who want to participate? –

This is a really good chance to get the opinion of someone else on your work! I recommend bringing any material you used while working on your sculpt in order to get the best out of the opportunity! I personally would love to see any original figma works!! I’ll see you at the Makuhari Messe!

☆ Akane Eiseihei Memo ☆

Kosshii-senpai! He knows all the best places to eat!! Even though he is a pretty quiet in person, he talks a whole lot on Twitter! Everything he ever makes never ceases to amaze me! His passion toward sculpting is also incredible, and I’m sure he’ll be happy to share it with you at the event!

Masanori Kuroda (Max Factory)

– What made you become a sculptor? –

I was a huge fan of CAPCOM, so after high school I enrolled in a technical college that focused on figures in Tokyo, Shinjuku. That was where I first made figures, and saw all sorts of professional and amateur works day after day. Looking at all those works made me work even harder to become a professional myself. I also owe a lot to my roommate at the time, who influenced me a lot!

– A word to those who want to participate? –

There are loads of books and tutorials on the practical side of sculpting, but when it comes down to the way of thinking and what to do once you’re finished… there isn’t much to work with! I know many people have learned sculpting by themselves, which can often leave you stuck once you reach a certain point!

This is the perfect opportunity to have someone else look at your work and point out things you may not have noticed. It’s a chance to help you figure out how to improve – so let’s get to it!

☆ Akane Eiseihei Memo ☆

The tall sculptor with a weak stomach, Kero-chan! He can be a little slow at times, but he really makes all kinds of figures from the cutest girls to amazing male figures. He is kind-hearted and hard-working, and I’m sure he can help you with any problems you might be having with your sculpting!

Akihito Takano (Good Smile Company)

Nendoroid KanColle Series Sculpting Director.
– What made you become a sculptor? –

I always enjoyed making and sculpting things and wanted to become a professional. I made my own style of things for ages, but then about 10 years ago at WonFes I happened to make friends with the guy at the table next to mine – and he introduced me to a professional sculptor! That then led to me finding a job creating the things I loved so much.

Although my work at GSC at the moment is more on direction and management than actual sculpting at the moment, I do still make things all the time – including items that I enter into the GSC Cup competition!

– A word to those who want to participate? –

Come by and ask me whatever you want! I’m even happy to do some career counselling if you’d like!

☆ Hamako Memo ☆

The movie-loving, reliable sculpting director who loves to talk! His recent work on the KanColle series and the intricate ship parts around them has been amazing! He figures out the perfect sizes and methods to get around the most complex of sculpting problems in no time!

Mesuka (Good Smile Company)

Sculpting Director of the Nendoroid Vocaloid Series

– What made you become a sculptor? –

When I was a student I saw a Card Captor Sakura figure at the Kotobukiya Tachikawa store, and instantly knew that I wanted to be able to make things like that myself. I joined the sculpting club at my university where I learned all sorts of things. While looking for jobs I was set out to find a job making things, which led me on the path of the figure maker…. where I managed to get a job working with Good Smile Company.

– A word to those who want to participate? –

I don’t think this kind of opportunity arises very often, so please feel free to come by and have a chat!

☆ Hamako Memo ☆

Whenever I give a really vague description of what I want to do, Mesuka is always able to find a really great way to bring out exactly what I describe. It’s so easy to discuss sculpting things with him that I am sure that anyone who comes by will enjoy chatting with him. Plus he is the life of the sculpting room! Always bringing up new topics and wearing eccentric clothes!

ehenmushi (Good Smile Company)

Sculpting Director of the LoveLive! Nendoroid Series

– What made you become a sculptor? –

When I was young I really enjoyed collecting things. The Star Wars films premiered while I was in high school, and I became addicted to collecting the Pepsi bottle-caps at the time… I went to all the supermarkets and convenience stores I could find to locate the bottle-caps that I didn’t yet have. But after collecting things for many years my vision started to change… it wasn’t enough to just collect them any more – I needed to start making them for myself!

– A word to those who want to participate? –

Perhaps it’s just me… but I think a sculptor’s work is suited to those who can become completely addicted to what they are doing – so much so that nothing else around them even enters the senses! Someone who’s room is filled with the things they love. I’m happy to give advice on anything you bring through to me, but I’m also more than happy to chat about things like that as well!

☆ Hamako Memo ☆

A director that takes a logical approach to sculpting, slowly building up perfect figures. He also has a really playful side as well though! There have even been some interesting pranks played in the sculpting workshop on the past… so don’t always take him too seriously! Also… for some reason he often brings back souvenirs of fish or seafood!

Kai Sasaki (Good Smile Company)

– What made you become a sculptor? –

Originally I was studying special effects makeup at a technical college, where I met another student in my class who was making figures. The first time I happened to see him working on one was the first time I thought to myself that someone actually has to make the things – strangely that was something I had never really considered and it came to me as quite a shock. I decided to enroll in a special figure sculpting class alongside my special effects makeup studies. I then went on to enter GSC’s Sculptor’s Tryout, which got me where I am today!

– A word to those who want to participate? –

I’ll be taking this seriously, so come at me with some serious questions!!

Happy New Year 2015!

Happy New Year!!

Thanks for a wonderful 2014 everyone!!

This year I will once again be writing up all sorts of blogs about GSC and it’s products here on Kahotan Blog, and I hope you’ll all stop by once in awhile to take a read!

I’m sure that many of you started work or school again as of yesterday… how has the start of 2015 been for you? I still don’t think I’ve eaten enough New Year’s goodies yet! Personally I like to eat my mochi with sweet soy sauce or shichimi soy sauce!

Anyway, I’ve decided that the first blog of 2015 is going to be some interviews with the GSC Planning Team members! (`・ω・´)

They will each answer the following three questions!

1) What was your first dream of the New Year?
2) What was most memorable about the end of the year?
3) What are your aspirations for 2015?

Let’s get started! ♪

The man behind all the KanColle and Nintendo Planning, with hobbies ranging from mountain climbing to Nagoya idols! He also stands 186.5cm tall… perhaps the tallest of anyone in the offices! (Translator’s Note: Liez! I’m taller!)

I went to a concert and met someone I never expected to see there. “What! I never knew you were a fan?!”

2) What was most memorable about the end of the year?

Snow on New Year’s day at my parent’s place!

3) What are your aspirations for 2015?

\ Otanaka /

1) What was your first dream of the New Year?

One of my friends was warning me that something was coming in the second half of the year.

The problem is… I don’t remember what that something was…

2) What was most memorable about the end of the year?

I caught a cold. Spent half my out enjoying myself and the other half stuck in bed.

I had a headache most of the time I was out causing more trouble than it was worth… but I went out to watch ‘Big Hero 6’ which made the whole year end worth it!

 3) What are your aspirations for 2015?

To reach for the unknown!

It’s always scary to try new things when the old things are still working, but at the same time it’s a great thrill and can be well worth the effort. I want to put some time and effort into that and see what comes out!

3) What are your aspirations for 2015?

Become the GSC Goods Watchman! We had lots of goodies at Comiket, but more are coming up for WonFes!! ♪

We’ve been increasing the amount of goods we make ever since Horokoshi-neesan joined GSC! (`・ω・´) I see an interesting looking wooser T-shirt in the first photo too!!

 3) What are your aspirations for 2015?

Nendoroid Hatsune Miku: Senbonzakura Ver. has been so well received by everyone, that I can’t wait to plan some other characters too!

The atmosphere of the Senbonzakura world is so lovely! I look forward to more!

The GSC Lab Member and planner for Fate and Madoka Magica products, as well as Kahotan Broadcasts cameraman!

\ Yassan! /

  1) What was your first dream of the New Year?

I want to a New Year’s party with a primary school friend and bumped into a friend from high school.

I think that’s what caused it, but I dreamt we were all playing baseball and tennis together.

2) What was most memorable about the end of the year?

After the above mentioned party, we went to Gotenba where I got an amazing view of Mt. Fuji!

figFIX Conan Edogawa & figma Criminal and ‘The Perfect Insider’ Set Building!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

Every Spring I always look forward to a new Detective Conan movie! I get goosebumps whenever I hear the movie’s theme song!! It’s even better that it changes slightly each time!!

The last movie featured the Tokyo Skytree, where the GSC offices are located! I got all excited when I saw the silhouette preview in the previous movie!! I can’t wait for the new issue of the manga to release on the 18th December!

Anyway, as I’m sure many of you may have guessed, today’s blog will be about this item from FREEing!

figFIX Conan Edogawa & figma Criminal!

From “Detective Conan” comes a set featuring a figFIX of Edogawa Conan as well as a figma of the ‘Criminal’!· figFIX Conan Edogawa features an articulated head, as well as optional parts that allow him to make his signature pointing pose or wristwatch tranquilizer gun pose!
· figma Criminal comes with a rifle, knife and various other dangerous weapons allowing for all sorts of poses!
· Using the smooth yet posable joints of figma, you can act out a variety of different scenes.
· An articulated figma stand is included, which allows various poses to be taken.

Yahoooooo!!!! (๑´ㅂ`๑)

Detective Conan is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and both the main character ‘Conan Edogawa’ as well as the popular ‘Criminal’ silhouette from the series!

The pose above captures both the ‘You’re the culprit!” and the ‘There is only one truth!” poses!

The characteristic shape of his head, his blue jacket and his shoes have all been faithfully kept in place! ♪

The way he looks from the back looks exactly like the original manga!

Conan is a part of the figFIX series, while the Criminal is a part of the figma series. The two are however sold as a set!

However, something to note is that while normally the figFIX series is static other than an articulated head, Conan also features interchangeable parts for a could of different poses! ヽ(*・ω・)人(・ω・*)ノ

Along with the pointing pose from above, you can also choose to pose him using the wristwatch tranquillizer gun!

The left and right arm parts are both completely interchangeable, so changing the pose is quick and easy!

Additionally, he also comes with standard straight arms! ♪

The arms together with the neck articulation allows for simple poses to serious looks like this!

Anyway, moving on we also have figma Criminal!! ♪

This one is a standard figma with all the normal joints for all sorts of poses, but he also comes with a multitude of weapon parts to enjoy! (σ・∀・)σ

Including the rifle above, he comes with a total of six different weapons to choose from!

I can see so much playability with these parts!! <○><○>

Personally I found the rope parts rather interesting, so here we have the Criminal holding them with an evil grin on his face!

He looks so nefarious!

Just looking at it makes me hear the Criminal’s theme from the soundtrack play through my head! Along with the evil grin above, he also comes with an angry or panicked expression!

I made this pose in the image of when Conan reveals him to be the bad guy! You can also use it with the weapons as a rather frightful shouting expression!

His toes are even separately articulated for tip-toe poses!

I’m sure he will be a load of fun to display alongside other figmas too!! ( ´ノД`)

Fun as a set or each on their own!
figFIX Conan Edogawa & figma Criminal

Now for a rather interesting bonus!

The other day, GSC went to help with the filming of an episode of the TV drama, ‘The Perfect Insider’ (Subete ga F ni Naru)!

TV Drama: The Perfect Insider

Broadcast Times:
Tuesdays 21:00 – 21:54. (Fuji TV)

Summary:

There, various experiments have been conducted in a low temperature research room. During the night a murder takes place. But how did GSC help out with the filming of a drama? In the episode that airs today as well as next week’s episode, GSC went to help out with the making of the set! Some fans may have already noticed the GSC logo in the preview from the last episode!!

Today I’m going to be showing a few photos of the set building!

===============================

Last month. Somewhere in Kantou.
(*Not actually Yokohama)

I joined the advertising team to help out with setting the stage for the episode’s events… events that take place at a ‘Modeler’s Festival’!

Various other companies also came by to help out with the set!

We brought around thirty figures which were used on the set!

One of the newcomers to GSC this year, Yoshii (@gsc_yoshii) put them together most efficiently!

In the time it took me to put one figure together she had done three… but slowly but surely the display came together…

Each figure was arranged by series, and carefully placed to be at a good eye-level for filming! The filming staff made a few changes on the recording day, but this is how the display looked on the day of filming!

Ooh! This setup lets the filming take place in between the figures!

I wasn’t there on the day of filming, but they were kind enough to share this photo with me for the blog! Thank you!!

Not to mention that Katagiri Masato’s actor Makoto Sakamoto seemed to love our products!!

Thank you!!!

He looks so cute looking over all the figures…!!
Perhaps it’s just me, but that short cut, black hairstyle looks adorable to me!!

I’ll be sure to keep these photos safe in my ‘Precious Stuff’ folder!

Anyways, to get back on track! While I was helping set up I decided I need to sneak around and take some photos! _(°ω°」 ∠)_三_(°ω°」 ∠)_三

However! I can’t show those as the episode hasn’t aired yet!

I’ll take a look at those photos at a later stage…
but here is one little bonus for now!

A mysterious poster that was on display at the exhibition! What could it mean?!

You’ll have to watch the episode tonight to find out!!

By the way, the series has also been confirmed for an anime by A-1 Pictures to be directed by Mamoru Kanbe! I look forward to that too!! <○><○>

Minicchu: Love Live

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

My eyes are getting itchy due to my pollen allergies… I use eye drops all the time which makes it constantly look like I’ve been crying…!

Anyway, today I’m going to be taking a look at a product recently announced by Phat! Company:

Minicchu: Love Live!

From the popular anime series Love Love! comes a second set of idols based on the adorable illustrations of Kengou Yakumo, here to join the chibi Minicchu series of figures from Phat! Company.

The set features all nine members including Honoka Kousaka, Umi Sonoda, Kotori Minami, Eli Ayase, Nico Yazawa, Nozomi Tojo, Maki Nishikino, Rin Hoshizora and Hanayo Koizumi all dressed up in their stage outfits from μ’s 5th single ‘Wonderful Rush’. Be sure to collect them all!

They’re all so cute!! (*´Д`)=з

Each of the nine members of μ’s are dressed up in adorable outfits that make them look a bit like cute cabin attendants! ♪

I can just picture the PV of them dancing in these outfits playing through my head! As usual, the adorable illustrations by Kengou Yagumo have been transformed into figures perfectly! ♥︎

Each of the character’s outfit designs differ, and each of those changes has of course been faithfully kept on the figures! The details on their accessories and hats! (`・ω・´)

The sculpting of each of their hair is also fantastic!

Even though they are so small, the feeling of movement in the way their hair is sculpted gives them a very dynamic feeling. It really brings across the lively feeling of μ’s! ヽ(*・ω・)人(・ω・*)ノ

Even from the back they are filled with life! ♪

It is always a challenge on deciding how far to take the detail when making figures this small! Obviously they can’t be too detailed based on the size, but at the same time you don’t want them to be too simple – figures need a bit of detail to give them that special something!  (´□`。)

It must have been hard to get such a cute balance with these Minicchus!

The series really preserves the chibi appearance while still giving such a nice level of detail to the characters! Definitely a set of figures that fans will be happy with!

Let’s take a look at the different school years separately! (ノ`・∀・)ノ

– 1st Years –

– 2nd Years –

– 3rd Years –

The μ’s members are too cute! (´□`。)

You can display them separated by school year like above, or instead just display them all together!

I decided to have Kotori-chan in the center! ♪

Remember though that these are sold by ‘blind box’! You won’t know which character is inside until you open it! ♥︎

*Box of nine also available in stores and on the GSC Online Shop.

Minicchu Love Live: Rubber Pass Case (9 Types)

I only managed to borrow three samples, but all of the nine members will be available! Having a nice pass case like these makes the trip to school or work so much more enjoyable! (‘-‘*)(,_,*)(‘-‘*)(,_,*)
