The last blog of 2015!!

As such, today is going to be a rather different blog to the usual!
Today is an interview with the Good Smile Company CEO, Aki Takanori!!

– Looking Back on 2015 –

Kahotan: We’ve reached the climax of 2015! What do you think about the trends of the figure market this year?

This was the year that male character figures really exploded into the market. There had long been signs that the demand for them was increasing, but this was the year that they finally took the stage and the market jumped to show that they were interested. We took a chance in creating the ORANGE ROUGE brand and it turned out to be a very positive challenge for us that allowed the two very different markets to be separated from each other, allowing for more networking and communication toward fans looking specifically for male figures.

Kahotan: The ORANGE ROUGE brand was announced as a joint brand between GSC and Max Factory around the Summer Wonder Festival… but I feel like it was already moving well before that too.

It’s not that we were releasing absolutely no male figures, but we needed to categorise them in a way that fans could easily separate the male character figures from others. Thus the ORANGE ROUGE brand was born, and I think it was an innovation that could determine to the way in which the figure industry is headed.

Kahotan: But there were other manufacturers that also had brands that focused on male characters…

Without a doubt, there were those before us that charged ahead with the popularity, but the ‘innovation’ I’m talking about isn’t just products that are aimed at the female market. I’m talking about something much deeper down – the need to explore the possibility of the figure world. Things like experimenting to get girls more interested in the world of figures, or exploring possibilities to get figures to fans overseas more directly… all things that the industry has been trying for many years and will always be looking ahead to improve further whenever the opportunity presents itself. The fact that Touken Ranbu was such a huge hit has really allowed the male figure market to stand out this year, but it just one of the many things that we have tried that was fortunate to bud into something really big.

(・∀・)：I guess another example of something that GSC tried this year was the ‘Nendoroid Co-de’ series, which was aimed primarily at the younger generation of girls!

Exactly. The hobby industry is typically aimed at the late teens up to adults, so working toward a completely different market gave a very fresh outlook. Whether or not the series has really taken off yet is not really something I’m too concerned about as I know that as we continue to try things can only get better. These kind of new challenges are one of the foundational principles of GSC as a company!We didn’t just want to approach the market as a ‘toy’, but something that instead kept the element of being a figure and also came with the quality that the GSC name has always been associated with. The series allowed GSC products to be lined up in a completely different section of shops which is definitely a step forward in reaching out to more people. The start of the Co-de series was aimed at the younger generation, but seeing the reaction future products in the series might be aimed at a completely different market too – once again showing the potential of innovation.

Kahotan: Younger children that played with the Co-de series at a young age might find themselves enjoying the next set as they grow up as well!

I hope so! Having figures at a young age definitely puts you right on the path to being a collector at a later age!

Kahotan: To all you youngsters enjoying the Co-de series now… we will see you all again in the future!!

Kahotan: In 2015 the yen has been rather weak, but there was also quite a big increase in the market share overseas, correct?

The weak yen has really hurt the figure industry (as many figures are manufactured overseas), but on the positive side it has made purchasing figures from overseas slightly less of a burden on fans. Thanks to the increase of simultaneous broadcasts online, most of the anime series that are airing in Japan can now easily be seen my fans at pretty much the same time as they air in Japan, along with that the increase of digital book readers also allows fans to easily get hold of Japanese manga series. Content from Japan is overall much easier to get hold of in the overseas market now, which is great for us as it means that they can enjoy the products we create at the same time as they are popular here in Japan.I still can’t accurately say just how much power there is in the overseas market, but we have recently been putting a lot of effort into out overseas Facebook pages, and of course Good Smile Shanghai and ULTRA TOKYO CONNECTION in America are working their hardest directly in the overseas markets. The current economic situation makes it quite a tough prospect to be profitable, but even in times like this GSC and related companies are determined to continue trying new things. We’ve put a lot of things in place this year, and it will be interesting to see how they work out in the years to come.

Kahotan: Speaking of new things that we tried this year, we can’t forget about the Red Bull Air Race!

That’s right! I still am not entirely certain how we managed to get quite so involved in that! Even so, it was without a doubt a great experience. Setting everything up for a big event and then seeing people share the experience on Twitter and other platforms… that kind of experience makes one want to go to the event again, or even go with other friends that saw the experience online and thought it looked like fun. To be involved in an event that had such a strong impression behind it was an amazing opportunity. If these events that allow us to see these reactions and responses didn’t exist I think I would be a lot more uneasy about things!

Kahotan: I know what you mean! When going to WonFes and seeing all those fans that come just for their love of figures… it really inspires me!

Events are increasing in both number and size all the time, so I think this is something the whole industry is feeling at the moment. To think we would be invited to help run one of the largest sports events in the world was both an honor, and also allowed us to add a bit of GSC flavor to the event that made it all the more special. That said, I don’t think it’s enough just yet. We’re going to make it an even better event next year, you can bet on that!I really don’t know if working on the Air Race will have any effect on the number of GSC fans, but if we can stand at an event where people are enjoying themselves thanks to the work we have done, then I hope we can use that enjoyment for new products and services that fans will enjoy just as much. I am really grateful that we had the opportunity to challenge something of that scale.

– What do You See for 2016? –

Kahotan: Next year is the 15th anniversary of Good Smile Company as well as the 10th anniversary of the Nendoroid series! We have already announced the Nendoroid 10th Anniversary Live and Nendoroid Photo contest to celebrate!

Yep! We already have lots of 10th anniversary items in the works as well!! At WonFes we are going to have around 600 Nendoroids on display and I really hope lots of people get to take look through them and enjoy the history of the brand… to talk about what the brand has been through over these ten years! We want to continue the series for many years to come, but I would also love to hear what others think about the significance of continuing the series…Before we know it it will be the 10th anniversary of Hatsune Miku, then the 10th anniversary of Snow Miku… things we have been involved with for a good five or ten years are fast approaching, and sometimes it feels like it’s time for GSC to enter a new phase…

Kahotan: A new phase…!

As I’ve constantly been saying, GSC is constantly challenging… trying new things. It’s like there are a whole bunch of doors that lead to different rooms and we’re constantly knocking on the doors wondering what is inside. There are a lot of doors that just refuse to open, but there are also a lot of doors that will open up just with a turn of the doorknob. Sometimes the door leads to somewhere really spacious where it is really difficult to figure out where to go afterwards, while other times it leads to a tiny room where you can hardly manage to move around. While we will never stop trying to open these doors, what we need to do is take responsibility for both the doors we opened and those that opened up for us.On the other hand, we have a series that has been nurtured all the way to 600 products that is loved by many all over the world. We need to cover both of these sides – we need to open the new doors while also protecting the brands that we have nurtured up until now as much as possible.

Kahotan: There are always lots of things to consider on both fronts!

Things to protect, and things to invest in… there are so many different things to consider with both – consideration that ultimately leads to more change. 2016 will be a year to reevaluate the meaning and significance of many things, as well as focus our communication with customers, carefully taking in how we are being seen by the fans.Through the GSC 15th anniversary and 10th Nendoroid anniversary I’m sure we will connect with many more people, which will only make us want to more people to have fun! Surprise more people with new projects! Which will go on and on always leading to more and more interesting things. Always remember that what we do is all based around our fans reactions – that is the the most important thing to our energy as a company! We’ll do everything we can to bring you something amazing that you can’t even begin to imagine next year!

Kahotan Post Office: Winter Edition – Part 2

I had some akashiyaki over the weekend for the first time in ages and was reminded of their deliciousness. The fluffiness is like a ball of happiness! *nom* (๑´ㅂ`๑) *nom*

The theme this time around was ‘Winter & Figure‘!! A big thank you to everyone who took the time to send me their photos! Every single one of them captured Winter so nicely in various different situations! She fell asleep while waiting for the Admiral to come home. This is definitely my best photo I have taken this year.

It’s the perfect sign of Winter for me!! I can just imagine how she must have slowly become more sleepy while for the Admiral to come home, until eventually giving in! Just looking at her puts a smile on my face! (｡･ω･)ﾉﾞ

The curry and wine glasses prepared on the table also show the attention to detail! Thank you for the lovely photo!! ♡

I went on a date with Miku-san to see the Autumn leaves on Arashiyama in Kyoto. The sceney filled with Autumn colors was beautiful, but Miku-san was just as beatiful. My friend also brought a Nendoroid along when we came, so I guess this was actually a double date!

I have recently developed an interest in toys that can make sweets or do some other kind of cooking. Maybe I’ll buy one as a Christmas present! (for myself…)

Nendoroid Plus: Hatsune Miku x CuteRody Pullback Cars!★

The famous toy horse created in Italy ‘Rody’ as well as the Nendoroid Plus series of Vocaloid characters are being released together as a collaboration project!

Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len and Megurine Luka are all available and each come with a CuteRody that matches up with their image color. The CuteRody horses are also made as pullback cars allowing you to give the Vocaloid characters an adorable ride as well!

A cute collaboration between Miku-san and Rody!

This is the same mechanism that was included with the Nendoroid Plus: Vocaloid Pullback Cars released back in 2010!

△ It was always so fun to watch them drive forward! (=ﾟωﾟ)ﾉ

The Rody matches her hair color perfectly! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

I love the fact that the one dot on the size has been changed into a musical note too! ♪

Kagamine Rin & CuteRody (Lemon)

A lovely yellow Rody to match with Rin-chan!

Rin-chan’s big ribbon has quite a powerful presence!

Kagamine Len & CuteRody (Lemon)

The same yellow Rody for Len as well! ☆

The Rody design really does have such a cute form!! ( ๑॔˃̶◡ ˂̶๑॓)◞♡

A stylish pink to match the mature Luka-san! (/ω＼)

The Rody’s all have the same face, but some how the last one definitely seems to have a much more ladylike expression!!

Each of the characters has also been fully sculpted on the back as well, making them fully enjoyable as figures as well!! ε=(｡・д・｡)

△ The chibi look of their hair is so cute! ♪
It kind of looks like Rody’s ears are on the characters from here!

Unfortunately as the samples I was taking photos of are still just prototypes I wasn’t able to capture the pullback movement, but it seemed like a waste not to have some kind of movement… so I decided to make a frame-by-frame GIF instead!

It was rather fun to make…! ☆

I actually made an even long er GIF, but it went over the file-size limit for the blog… so I had to give the cut version…（；∀；）

The actual products will of course only move forward when the character is in the seat, so don’t get the wrong idea from my playful GIF!

Miyu Takagi Visits the GSC Offices!

Today I’ll be giving a little report about a visit we had from Miyu Takagi! The voice actor of Hacka Doll #1 from ‘Hacka Doll the Animation’ which is currently airing!!

Anyway, let’s get started with the office tour! Eh?

△ I thought I heard a camera behind me!

We have a couple of our previously released products on display at the offices, and Takagi-san seemed very determined to grab a couple of photos of some of the Fate related figures!! ♪

Anyway, let’s move deeper into the offices! (｡･ω･)ﾉﾞ

As I’m sure many of you are aware, the GSC offices are located VERY close to the Tokyo Skytree!!

△ You can only see the middle of it out the window…

By the way, everyone here at GSC has their own choice of PC and peripherals to get work done as comfortably as possible! Not only that, but everyone also displays mountains of figures, posters, models and more really showing off the series that they love!

（´-`）.｡oO（GSC is rather free when it comes to things like this… it makes me wonder what other companies are like!)

After admiring all the desks, its time to peek into the glass-windowed company president office! (/ω・＼)

△ The illustrations on the glass were drawn by famous international artists!

Anyway, moving on… it’s time to sneak into…

The GSC Production Studios!

– Infiltration Complete! –

After discussing a little about how all the figures she had seen were all actually made in this very room and wandering around a little bit… Takagi-san found something that seemed to grab her interest!!

△ But it seems like Hamako from the planning team is trying to stop her!

“Is this… what I think it is?!”

△ She seemed quite engrossed…!

What she found was none other than…

Nendoroid Hacka Doll #1!♥︎

△ She looks so energetic and ready for some fun even without color yet!

“I want to make one too!”

△ She seemed very confident!!

Anyway, let’s move to another location with a bit more space and take a closer look! ♪

The Nendoroid was still unpainted at this point, but it is now currently being painted!!

The painted version will be coming soon, along with a look at her optional parts and alternate expressions! Look forward to them!! ★

As you might expect, the twin-tails are fitted with joints allowing for lots of fun posing!

Hmm… but who is that yellow figure behind her?!

Seen they are both ULTRA SUPER PICTURES animes… Metamoroid wooser came to join the fun! ♪

△ Having these two and the voice actor together! Rare photo!!

It was then that footsteps were heard…! (°Д°；≡°Д°；)

△ He looks a little off… but there is no doubting it!

wooser-sama came to find the cute gal!!

△ They were getting along great in within 5 seconds!

I even got a GIF of the two of them dancing about!!

△ So cute!

Himouto! Umaru-chan Trading Figures

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

I meant to buy a black coffee but somehow ended up with both milk and sugar. I love sweet things and I love hot drinks… but I don’t like mixing the two!!

Anyway, today I’m going to be taking a look at…

Himouto! Umaru-chan Trading Figures!

From the popular anime series ‘Himouto! Umaru-chan’ comes a selection of characters as cute and colorful trading figures! The set includes Umaru-chan in various situations including ‘I Love Cola! Umaru’, ‘Spoilt Child Umaru’, ‘Sleepy Umaru’ and ‘Upset Umaru’. Other characters in their chibi versions from ‘Himouto! Umaru-chan S’ are also included, such as Nana Ebina, Kirie Motoba and Sylphynford Tachibana! There is also one secret figure to look forward to!!‘Sleepy Umaru’ is made so that she can also be connected onto things like pens, while ‘Upset Umaru’ can instead be used as a paperweight! Various bonus ways to enjoy some of the figures! Be sure to add these adorable Umarus to your collection!!

The little legs sticking out the back are also very cute!!

As you can see they are a little smaller than Nendoroids and have a kind of rounded appearance! (*´Д｀)=з

They are small enough to easily fit in the palm of your hand like so!

The size makes them very easy to take them with you all over!

Be sure to take your Umaru-chan out of the house sometimes or who knows what will happen to her! (σ・∀・)σ

△ Despite the size each of their hairstyles has been faithfully preserved!

Nana Ebina

Ebina-chan is posed looking nervous and timid as usual! The quivering mouth really completes the pose, and her trademark hairstyle is looking great! っ(｀・ω・´)ゞ

The shrimp-colored hair accessories are also faithfully kept in mini size!

Kirie Motoba

Even her ‘ahoge’ sticking-up hair is included on the figure! ε=(｡・д・｡)

She also has a bit of a sideways glance which matches the reserved look on her face!

Sylphynford Tachibana

Sylphyn!! ☆

The unique frilly outfit and curly hair look wonderful! Even her flower-shaped pupils have been faithfully included! ♡

All of the characters are packed fill with personality despite their small size!

Plus Sleepy Umaru comes with a special feature! Nekoronbus can be removed allowing you to attach her on to other things!

△ She can hold onto the edge of a bowl or maybe even a mug like so!

Upset Umaru has a rather unique pose that also allows her to weight things down rather well!

Metamoroid wooser

I occasionally come down with an illness that makes me want to eat far too much meat. It’s hitting me right now, but in a special version that makes we want to eat hamburgers urgently…!

But anyway, today I’m going to be taking a look at a product that went up for preorder today…

Metamoroid wooser!☆

From the anime series ‘wooser’s hand-to-mouth life: phantasmagoric arc’ comes a transforming figure of the mysterious yellow creature himself – wooser!
The strange round form that is wooser can transform into Rin mode, with Rin wearing a cute magical girl costume to boot! A magic wand and a stack of money are also included to display with them. The figure is partially articulated in either mode, allowing for all sorts of different situations to enjoy!

From the popular anime series ‘wooser’s hand-to-mouth life: phantasmagoric arc’ comes a Metamoroid of the main character that everyone has come to know and love(?) – wooser! He lovely round yellow form has been beautifully made and the three dots that make up his eyes and nose are so cute! I can just imagine his voice coming from the figure! ♪

Now… what exactly is a Metamoroid? Well, simply put… it’s a transforming figure!!

△ The division lines under his nose give him a kind of mecha look!

The details of Rin on the inside are also very adorable! Take a look at the large ribbons on her chest and in her hair, the two-layers of frills that make up her cute magical girl outfit and even more tiny ribbons on her socks!! ☆

Her legs and ankles are also fitted with articulation allowing for more magical girl like poses too! ♪

Plus as you may have already noticed she comes with two different parts that can he held in her hands… a magical wand and a pile of money!

The wand is more suited to her transformed form….

While the pile of bank notes in her hand must be a remnant of her pre-transformation!!! (/ω＼)

△ There is even a print of wooser-sama on the money!!

By the way! You can also store the parts away inside!

This should prevent them getting lost too easily! (●´ω｀●)

Another thing to note is that this figure transforms from wooser to Rin without adding or removing any parts! Absolutely everything needed for the transformation is found inside of wooser!! ε=(｡・д・｡)

The 4th Good Smile Cup Figure/Model Contest – Part 2: Photo Contest

Mosquitoes really seem to love my blood. I think for the most part I’m a very gentle person, but when I hear a mosquito I can become quite… violent! (I still manage to get bitten though…)

Anyway, today I’m going to be continuing with a look at some of the entries into this year’s… Good Smile Cup!

What is the Good Smile Cup?

The Good Smile cup is a contest between the GSC employees as well as related companies, to see who can create something filled with love and originality! ★

The aim of the project is to simply create something you enjoy creating, and then to submit it for everyone to see! It’s not at all serious or anything, but a lot of fun and interesting entries can come up! Everything here was just made personally, and none of the items – no matter how well made – are currently being made into products!!

This time around the Good Smile Cup was divided into five sections! ♪

Today’s Touken Ranbu Round-Up!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

Whenever I had a sports day at school my lunch would always be inari-zushi! Now whenever I eat inari-zushi my body feels all powered up and ready to do anything! Plus they’re delicious!

Anyway, as of today Nendoroid Kogitsunemaru is up for preorder!

He might be a rather large character, but as a Nendoroid he still fits nicely in the palm of your hand! For those who missed my blog yesterday, be sure to take a look for the full review! (｡･ω･)ﾉﾞ

– 1/8th Scale Figure Kogitsunemaru –

My name may mean ‘small fox’, but I’m by no means small.

From the popular browser game ‘Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-‘ comes a 1/8th scale figure of Kogitsunemaru, the great sword. He has been faithfully sculpted based on the pose he takes when you receive him in the game, with his long, flowing hair carefully detailed to ensure that he can be proud of his beautiful ‘fur’.
His outfit opened out at the chest to reveal his impressive muscles has also been intricately sculpted down to the finest of details, and the his back which was never even visible on the original illustration is also filled with charm for fans to enjoy! Be sure to add the powerful Kogitsunemaru to your collection!

I borrowed him from Akane-Eiseihei so I could grab a few photos of my own…!

I think I’ll do a full review at a later stage, but until then enjoy some of the photos!
