Happy New Year 2017!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Wishing everyone a happy 2017! I hope everyone enjoys Kahotan’s Blog this year!

Hello everyone!! Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

2017 has only just begun but already all sorts of things have been announced for the new year! I’m sure we are set for an amazing year! This year the blog will continue running the same as last year, with a total of three people writing articles for the blog – the other two members were introduced last year in the blogs below! ♪

A New Contributor to Kahotan Blog: Suwabe!
A New Contributor to Kahotan Blog: Chan-shuu!

Suwabe (@gsc_suwabe) will be writing a blog around once a week, while Chan-shuu (@gscs_hirase) will be adding a blog about twice per month! Today I’m going to be talking with the two of them on their thoughts of writing for the blog last year! (●‘∀‘●)ノ”

First up, the blogger who focuses on ORANGE ROUGE items with lovely photos and writing filled with passion – Chan-shuu-senpai!

▲ Looking into the eyes of Nendoroid Sayo on the GSC site!

◆ How was writing for the blog?

I love figures, and I actually joined GSC due to my love of figure photography – it’s hard to call writing for the blog a job as I enjoy it so much it’s pretty much my hobby!!
The official product page on the GSC site often doesn’t quite capture everything I want to express about certain figures – specific poses, where the sculpt was specially detailed or various other little details – the blog allows me to point those out and share them with everyone which makes it really worthwhile for me.
It has been a really enjoyable experience! My blogs come at rather random intervals, but I hope to show off all sorts of figures throughout the year, and I hope everyone will enjoy reading the blogs that I write!

◆ Which photo from last year that you took do you like the most?

We announced the 1/8th scale Okurikara just after the rainy season in Japan. I often went outdoors and took photos of Touken Ranbu figures around that time and always tried to aim for a sunny day to get the best photos possible. This was the one time when I decided to take a photo out on a more cloudy, rainy day.
The photo captures the rather dull weather with a moss-covered stone lantern in the background, creating a scene as if Okurikara is sheltering from the rain – doesn’t he just look breathtaking!

As a side note, Chan-shuu also works as the photography director for many of the official photo shoots for GSC figures – in other words, most of the photos you see on the Good Smile Company website all involve his ideas and direction for the posing, backgrounds and angles of the photos!

▲ Back taking photos of the Sakura Kinomoto: Stars Bless You figure!

(´-`).。oO(Whenever I look at the photos of Sakura-chan on the GSC site I always remember the passion that GSC put into these photos!)

Next up, we have Suwabe – the blogger with a huge amount of energy who takes lovely photos to show off the charm of all sorts of figures!

▲ When I told her I was going to take a photo she just sat there perfectly still…

◆ How was writing for the blog?

I can’t believe it has already been more than half a year since I started! Time really flies is the first thing that comes to my mind!! But to put things really simply, I really enjoyed it! I think I brought a new element to the blog for fans to enjoy!
As a member of the Corporate Planning Division I never really got much of a chance to see the final prototypes of figures – so being able to see them, play with them and take photos of them has really been an great experience that allowed me to open up my more creative side at work. I wanted all the fans to read the blog if possible, and so always tried my very best to write a blog that everyone would find enjoyable!
At the end of last year I have reached 34 blogs, but it honestly only feels like I’ve written 10 or so. I need to continue writing to gain more experience and make the blog even more enjoyable for everyone out there who is reading. I will try my very best this year an even better blogger and I hope everyone will be there to support me along the way!

◆ Which photo from last year that you took do you like the most?

I picked this photo based on the Japanese saying ‘Never forget your original resolution’. These were the very first figures that I photographed for the blog myself – although when I look back on them now I can already see that the colors and composition could definitely use some improvement…
But that said, the one thing that has become clear to me is that you can leave me with all the erotic figures that show off lots of skin! This was the first of the sexy figures that I reviewed on the blog, but I think they really helped to build by ‘character’ as a blogger, and so they really stick in my memory.
When I looked up the exact meaning of the saying ‘Never forget your original resolution’ – it isn’t just about remembering how you wanted to begin, but it is also about remembering the embarrassing parts of the time that you were still inexperienced. I know that I still have a lot to learn, but I intend to continue forward without forgetting the embarrassing parts in the past, and instead not worrying about that and simply challenging myself to write the most enjoyable blogs possible!!

Suwabe is perhaps best known on the blog for the excitement she shows in her blogs (particular when it comes to sexier figures), but I also wanted to see what kind of photos she has when they are not figures! Thus I asked for one photo from her everyday life to share on the blog as well! (・∀・)

I searched my photos for quite a while but there really wasn’t anything all that interesting… in fact I kind of came to the realization that I don’t really take that many photos outside of my work life!

But here is a photo from a stage performance that I was invited to by one of my friends – the first I ever attended! Eita-san sang magnificently making it a performance to be remembered!

Not a person or thing… but a photo of a poster!!

I hope everyone is looking forward to her blogs this year!ヽ(*´Д`*)ノ

The three of us will be introducing various figures and much much more of the blog this year, so we do hope everyone will stay tuned and enjoy the blog this year!!!

Last Blog of 2016: An Interview with the GSC CEO Aki!

Hello everyone!! Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

Today is the very last blog of 2016!! (∩・∀・)∩

As with the previous few years, today I’m going to have a talk with the Good Smile Company CEO: Takanori Aki! The topics will all be related with things that GSC was involved with over the year!

Just a fair warning – the interview is a bit long!

○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●

– THEME #1 –
How was 2016 For You?

Well first of all it was a big move for us at Good Smile Company as we moved the offices over to Akihabara. That said Akiba really is perfect for us – we have everything we need here.

We can go out and buy any materials or references in a few minutes and it market research can be done right in our backyard. But most importantly we feel much closer to our fan base! Akiba is really the ideal place for the company.

It really does fit perfectly! The move was right before WonFes as well which made it all the more stressful… but now that it is done and dusted it just makes so much sense for a figure maker to be right in the heart of anime and game culture! Plus there are so many more places to choose to eat at now, which I’m very happy about!

▲ GSC’s ‘We Moved’ Business Card (Designed by Aki!)

After the move we have also been very busy with various customizations to the building. The first floor is currently also being renovated, and should be something interesting for everyone to see in 2017!

The inside of the offices have also changed a lot and we get some rather interesting things going on sometimes!

The 6th floor was rather empty when we first arrived here but at some point there was a tent put up right in the offices, and then some fancy lighting got put in… Now we have shelves filled with figures for guests to look at! We also got all new desks and chairs for the area!

▲ Back when the mysterious tent appeared in the offices.

▲ This is how the 6th floor looks at present! (The tent is no more…)

This year was also the Nendoroid 10th anniversary which included the Nendoroid Live Concert!

The event feels like it took place ages ago! Why exactly did we decide to have a live concert for the 10th Anniversary?

That’s a good question! *laughs*

We have released so many Nendoroids now and the amount of series that are related to the Nendoroid brand have increased exponentially over the years. We wanted some way to celebrate and share this growth with the fans, and the best idea that came from that was organizing a concert!

Events like concerts allow you to share your passion in real time with similar fans which always makes for an enjoyable time!

I remember listening to ‘Star!!’ at the concert and crying!! It was a really touching event!! But that wasn’t the only anniversary to celebrate this year!

It was also the 15th anniversary of Good Smile Company itself!

One of the many projects we organized for the 15th Anniversary was Sakura Kinomoto: Stars Bless You! When we first had the prototype on display at animate Akiba Culture Zone we received a warm response from both Japan and out overseas and it really become such a wonderful memory for me!!!  (´□`。)

▲ You can read my blog review of the figure here!

Yep. We also had it on display in Los Angeles as well as in Shanghai… this summer was the summer of Sakura-chan!

While a brand new series of Card Captor Sakura is in the works, this is one of those products that showed me the power of ‘nostalgia’ that older series like Card Captor Sakura have.

We also hosted the Good Smile Company 15th Anniversary Exhibition in August!

▲ You can also go on a virtual walk around the exhibit here!

Over 1600 figures all on display at once… it was quite the mission to get them all together and on display! *laughs*

The biggest thing to me about this event was the fact that I have looked over every single one of these figures from the prototypes to the final products. Looking over them I can tell you who sculpted most of them, which factory they were made at and even which figures had the production team up all night to get them finished. There are so many stories and memories within the figures for me.

I could see how dome of our sculptors have grown through the years which gave me a completely different experience to most people who came to the event – but it was such an enjoyable event for me all the same. I’m glad that everyone else who visited also seemed to enjoy it too!

In other words it wasn’t just the history of GSC’s figures, but also a place to remember all the people that have worked on the figures that also have a special place in the company’s history!

The 15th anniversary year was also filled with many new challenges! One of which was the hand puppet series that aired in summer this year – Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers!

We worked on Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers together with PILI in Taiwan as well as with Nitroplus who work in the same office building as GSC.

The fact that it was all puppets made for an interesting change and the fresh feel that came from it being made with help from across the ocean in Taiwan made it an amazing experience. What a great series it was!

▲ Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers Vol 1-4 on sale now!

I still remember how thrilling it was to watch the completed first episode!!

We had seen the first episode a huge number of times during the production stages, but for some reason I could never get bored of watching it.

It really draws you in to the style so nicely, and Urobuchi’s story together with the fresh style of puppets comes together to create a nostalgic yet completely new genre. I hope those who watched it could appreciate the different kind of potential it holds compared to other genres like anime.

I agree! It also allowed for so many unique experiences working together with the PILI team in Taiwan! Thanks to the fans who supported the series there is also a second season on the way, and I am already looking forward to working on it!

▲ The Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers Puppet Photo Book!

The next challenge GSC took on was our jump into the world of gaming with the smartphone game ‘Grand Summoners’!

Grand Summoners has just started this December, but there are many plans for it throughout 2017 so be sure to give it a try! Playing with others through the multiplayer system is always such an enjoyable time!! We also have some plans for some other games, so look out for more news on that side as well!

There are a couple of Good Smile Lab blogs about the game, so be sure to take a look if you want to know more! They are only in Japanese though!

⇒  Good Smile Lab Blog | Grand Summoner’s Developer Interview #1
⇒ Good Smile Lab Blog | Grand Summoner’s Developer Interview #2

How about when Japan’s Yoshihide Muroya takes first place at the Japan leg of the Red Bull Air Race!

That was one for the history books. The first day of the event was unfortunately bad weather which seemed like it would kill the mood of the event, but when Yoshihide took first place in his own country it really became an event to remember! We are already preparing for the next Red Bull Air Race in 2017!

– THEME #2 –

What are your thoughts on the figure market of 2016?

Looking over the year as a whole, the overseas market definitely seemed strong in 2016. I believe that the ‘otaku’ industry as a whole has been working on the overseas markets for a long time and the seeds have finally bloomed for harvest. I also get the feeling a lot of the series have also started to take note of their overseas fans and tune the content to better appeal to them.

How much does that change things for a figure manufacturer like GSC?

Well, GSC is becoming much more aware of this expansion in the market – it’s not like we are becoming completely reliant on the overseas market, but we definitely are paying more attention to our fans all over the world and not just those in Japan.

When looking at which content to add to our line-up we naturally start with series that will also reach the markets overseas. On the other hand we also have items that are only sold overseas – we were able to work on big names such as NARUTO for our overseas fans.

I also get a very strong feel for the overseas market growth when we rerelease older items! (`・ω・´)ゞ

Overseas fans will often preserve the popularity of series that have already calmed down in Japan, and they help keep the charm of these older series alive – as well as the figures that are made from them! We try to find the items that are back in demand and get them out to the fans.

Often the prices of these rereleased items need to climb up a little bit to match with the current times – but we try to keep the prices as close to the original as possible so that more fans can enjoy the figures for a fair price!

– THEME 3 –

What do you see for 2017?

Next year will once again be filled with all sorts of turning points! For example the Hatsune Miku GT Project is reaching it’s 10th season… and the 2017 Racing Miku is illustrated by none other than Tony-san!

▲ Fairy Racing Miku

Not to mention it’s also Miku’s 10th anniversary! ★

We’ve been walking a long path together with Miku-san, and I hope to celebrate her 10th anniversary in style! Look forward to it!

Hmm… is something in the works already?  ヽ(゚∀゚ヽ 三 ノ゚∀゚)ノ

Another big thing for 2017 is the Little Witch Academia TV anime starting in January!!

Ever since the first short episode was made for Anime Mirai, the popularity of the series has been known, and now it’s finally becoming a full anime series!

I really hope many people have this one on their watch lists – I’ve already been lucky enough to see the first few episodes through production and they are really amazingly done!! I can’t wait for everyone to see them!! *laughs*

The Little Witch Academia 2 was made through crowdfunding a few years back, but we also have another project that GSC is involved in that was recently funded through crowdfunding! The Hint Radio!

I never though I would be working on a radio as a figure manufacturer, but we are helping out in various different fields and overcoming challenges with some amazing minds and the project has been a very fulfilling experience. Yet another product that was born from the passion of fans.

Sales for the radio have been announced for Spring next year, so look forward to it!! (。・ω・)ノ゙

2016 was the Nendoroid 10th anniversary as well as the Good Smile Company 15th Anniversary – there were a lot of challenges we faced through the year, but you can be sure that we will face any and all challenges that come in 2017 as well and will strive to being everyone all sorts of excitement throughout the year!

I will also be striving to bring out the charm of all sorts of things on this blog and Twitter!!

○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●

That beings us to the end of the interview!!

I hope you all had a good 2016!!

Thank you for all your support this year, and I hope you’ll continue to read the blog in 2017!!

See you all next year!!!

DIY Nendoroid Repairs Part 2: Cleaning Dirt and Stickiness off Figures

Hello everyone! My name is Hou-san, one of the 2016 newcomers to GSC!!

Recently I’ve had a lot more opportunities to head outside with Nendoroids and take photos! Heading out the house and posing figures to take photos with the beautiful scenery outside can be very rewarding and a lot of fun!

The problem is… when you play around with figures outside it is much easier for them to get dirty!! Today I’m going to be taking a look at some simple techniques you can use to keep your Nendoroids and other figures clean!

▲ I’ll be using this Nendoroid Face Parts Case: Bunny as my example!

What should you do when your previous Nendoroids end up like this?!

▲ White figures like this mean that the dirt really stands out!

Today I’m going to be taking a look at a couple of possible methods to try when trying to clean dirt marks and stickiness from your figures!

Please note that this blog is simply introducing a few possible methods to clean figures! If you choose to make use of these methods you do so at your own risk!

· Using an Air Duster (Compressed Air)
· Using a Rubber Eraser
· Using a Copic Modeler #0 (Colorless Blender)
· Using a Neutral Detergent
· Using Scouring Cream

★ Using an Air Duster

When you want to try and clean away unwanted dust and dirt from a figure, air dusters are ideal for a quick, easy and safe clean! You can even get to those rather hard to each areas if the air duster has a extension piece!

★ Using a Rubber Eraser

Rubber erasers are a great way to clear away dirty marks from areas that are not painted. This is just a standard pencil eraser – simply rub away on the dirt and it will often clear it up nicely. This method is not recommended on areas that are painted, as it may rub the paint off the figure!

★ Using a Copic Modeler #0

Find out more about the COPIC’s colorless blender here:
https://imaginationinternationalinc.com/copic/101/colorless-blender/

There are a lot of marks that can be removed from figures by making use of a ‘Colorless Blender’ like the Copic Modeler #0!

You can touch up the figure with the pen directly, or if you want to be a little more accurate you can put some of the colorless blender on a cotton swab and then make use of that!

This will also clear away dirt on painted areas, but you run the risk of pulling the paint off together with the dirt, so once again this method is best for unpainted areas of figures!

▲ Nendoroid Kazuki Kazami

The above methods deal with general dust and dirt… but another common problem with figures is that once they have been in your collection for awhile they tend to become kind of sticky! What can we do about that?

★ Using a Neutral Detergent

Also see this previous blog written by Mikatan-sensei for a more in-depth look: Dealing with Stickiness on Figures!

The material figures are made from unfortunately do over time become a little sticky to the touch. What exactly causes this stickiness?

▲ A face plate with a bit of a sticky composition.

This stickiness is caused by the plasticizing agent that is is used in the materials of the figure. This plasticizer is added to the PVC (the main material used in figures) in order to make it softer – the more mixed in with the PVC, the softer and more flexible it becomes.

However, over time this plasticizing agent vaporizes and then sticks to the surface of the figure which creates a sticky layer! This stickiness occurs much faster when the plasticizing agent has nowhere to go – such as when you store a figure in the blister packaging and not out in the open.

The best way to clean this stickiness is with a neutral detergent! In most cases the standard dish-washing soap you use at home will do the trick!

Don’t use a sponge – the rough surface may cause unwanted scratches and damage to the figure! Simply gently clean the figure with your hands and the washing liquid!

After gently rubbing the figure clean, dry the figure with a soft cloth! Try to avoid tissues or paper towel as in the case there is still some stickiness remaining the tissue can get stuck to the figure and cause some unwanted problems! If after this the figure is still sticky, try soaking it in the same neutral detergent for a few hours and then cleaning it once again – this will normally get most figures free from stickiness!

★ Using Scouring Cream

If all else fails and you really want to get rid of the stickiness, this is your best bet! Scouring cream or liquid is a weak alkaline cleaning agent that contains abrasives such as silica minerals to clean tableware and metalware. It is very effective at removing the stickiness from figures!

However, as the name suggests there are abrasives in scouring cream which can very easily damage your figures as you are trying to clean them. Glossy parts on figures may also lose their shiny appearance after the use of scouring cream so always be careful! It’s best to first test on an area that can’t be seen too easily just in case! (Also do not try to use scouring powder, as it will almost always do more harm than good!)

Anyway, that is all for today’s figure cleaning hints! I hope this blog has been of use to somebody!! (^o^)

1/10 Scale Miniature Dioramas

Hi everyone! Suwabe (@gsc_suwabe)  from the Corporate Planning Division here! Today I’m going to be taking a look at some items that went up for sale at the GOODSMILE ONLINE SHOP today! Unfortunately they are only available in Japan at the moment though!

1/10 Scale Doll House!▼

These products are made by a company called COUNTRY WOOD GARDEN, and a selection of their products are now available on the Japanese GOODSMILE ONLINE SHOP! The reason for this is that the items are 1/10th scale which makes them a lovely size for figma figures!! ♪

Simple is best with these standard rooms that really are just like a doll house for figmas! You can see that the size is perfect to display figma inside! They can also be put together very easily! You just need to connect the various parts together!

Plus you can easily take the parts apart again, so when you are finished your photos or need a little more space you can store it away with ease!

I’m sure that there are a countless number of situations you can recreate using this set!

NAMCO Arcade Machine Collection (Tank Battalion / PAC-MAN / Galaga / Galaxian / RALLY-X)

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

We’ve reached the months of the year where a cup of warm tea really hits the spot! Because of that my percentage of Japanese snacks has increased quite substantially! (Mostly dango!)

Anyway, today I’m going to be taking a look at one of FREEing’s items that went up for preorder earlier today…

NAMCO Arcade Machine Collection
(Tank Battalion / PAC-MAN / Galaga / Galaxian / RALLY-X)!

Legendary NAMCO brand arcade game machines are being transformed into 1/12th scale miniatures! The game line-up includes classic games such as Tank Battalion, PAC-MAN, Galaga, Galaxian and RALLY-X!

Using the original designs of the arcade machines the shape and size together with the placement of the joysticks and buttons and even the artwork have all been miniaturized as faithfully as possible! The machines can easily be used together with 1/12th scale figures to have your favourite figures playing the classic NAMCO games!

*Each sold separately

Legendary arcade game machines recreated in detailed miniature size!

I’m sure there are many figure fans out there that will remember these arcade machines! They have all been faithfully converted into 1/12th scale miniature size for fans to enjoy as is, or to display with similar sized figures such as figmas! ★

Product Details

The actual frame of the machines are obviously made to look just like the originals, but that’s not all! The actual screen, the position of the buttons and even the area to insert the coins are all intricately made and faithful to the original machines!!

These are all ‘upright’ video arcade machines, which simply means they are made to be played while standing! It brings back memories of the retro games from the movie ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ for me! (∩・∀・)∩

The line-up includes these five games!

– Tank Battalion

– PAC-MAN

Galaga

Galaxian

RALLY-X

(。´-`).。oO( I know of PAC-MAN and Galaga thanks to the movie Pixels, but I honestly don’t know anything about the other three… but they are so colorful and the 8-bit graphics look so cute!

This should give a better idea of the size! ♪

▲ The 1/12 scale matches with figma figures nicely! ☆

The joysticks and buttons on the machines have all been elaborately included on the designs, so posing the machines with someone to play on them creates a rather realistic scene!

▲ I can just imagine the clicky-clacky sounds of the joystick moving!

Plus if you line-up a number of the machines you can recreate a complete game arcade for your figures!! This should allow for all sorts of fun situations in the figure world!! ヽ(゜∀゜ヽ 三 ノ゜∀゜)ノ

▼Here we have The Thinker carefully thinking which game to play with his ¥100 coin!

▼ “Man… this guy is good!” The kind of thing most people think when watching someone play.

As you can see they are awesome to display just by themselves, but using them as accessories to figures can create a lovely world for your figures to come alive in! (/ω\)

Add some classic arcade games to your figure collection!

NAMCO Arcade Machine Collection!
(Tank Battalion / PAC-MAN / Galaga / Galaxian / RALLY-X)

Currently up for preorder! ♥

Metamoroid Luluco

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

What exactly counts as ones ‘first love’? Is it the first time you feel something for someone, or only once you start taking it seriously? Do you have to succeed?

But anyway, today I’m going to be taking a look at the second Metamoroid…
Metamoroid Luluco!

From the anime series ‘Space Patrol Luluco’ comes a transforming figure of the middle school student that lives in OGIKUGO – Luluco! The figure features Luluco dressed up in her Patrol Suit, but can miraculously transform into ‘Gun Mode’ for a completely different appearance! Transform her in the name of Justice!

Be sure to also check out Nendoroid Luluco, which will be up for preorder at the same time!

Awake!
  Judgment

Gunmorphing!!

From Hiroyuki Imaishi’s latest original anime series ‘Space Patrol Luluco‘ comes a figure of the completely normal high school student herself – Luluco! The series is animated by TRIGGER, best known for their work on KILL la KILL and Little Witch Academia! ★

Each episode is only around seven minutes long making it a rather quick watch, but even so it is a lovely “Intergalactic First Love Story” filled with the energy that TRIGGER is so well known for!

⇒ Space Patrol Luluco Official Site

Anyway, let’s get back to the figure, starting with a look from the back! ♪

△Even with the chibi design the back has nice attention to detail!

The arms are connected with a ball joint allowing them to move around into various different poses, and the elbows also have a point of articulation for poses with bent arms! The legs can also be moved left and right from the knees down which allows for various different nuances! ☆

As long as you can get her to balance you can display her in all sorts of poses! ♪

But that isn’t the main part of this figure! For those of you who don’t know, the Metamoroid series of figures feature the ability to transform into something else!

⇒ Metamoroid #1: Metamoroid wooser

Those of you who have seen the series will already know where this is going!! She transforms exactly like she does in the series!!

Ta-da! /

The best thing about the transformation is that no parts are added during the process whatsoever! The transformation is all done just with the figure as it is!! (੭ु ›ω‹ )੭ु⁾⁾

Let’s take a closer look at the transformation! ♪

Remove the legs, belt, and air tank parts.

▼ Bent the head upward.

▼ Open her sides out.

Pull out the parts from her upper body.

▼ Spin the parts around with the legs!

▼ Adjust the direction of the arms.

▼ Reattach the leg parts.

▼ Reattach the air tank part.

▼ Slide the belt on.

★ COMPLETE!

It’s quite amazing transform her from human form into gun form without adding or removing any parts! Be sure to add your very own transforming Luluco to your collection… for Justice!!
Metamoroid Luluco!

She’ll be up for preorder from Friday the 24th June 2016!

But there is also another figure that will be joining her for preorders…!

I’ll be taking a look at her tomorrow!!

A New Contributor to Kahotan Blog: Chan-shuu!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

We had a few seating changes in the offices which left me next to a different person! It was pointed out to me by my new neighbour that I mumble onomatopoeia a lot without realizing it… now I feel bad for all those that have sat next to me in the past! (´・ω・`)

In case any of you missed the announcement the other day, Kahotan Blog will be updated by three different members from this month onward! Today I’m going to be having a quick chat with the second person who will joining the Kahotan blog team – updating around two times per month: Chan-shuu!

To summarize how the blog will be updated from this month onward, I will be updating on most weekdays as usual with Suwabe taking over for one day each week! Chan-shuu will be updating on Sundays around 2 times each month as a little bonus blog! ♪

A New Age of Kahotan Blog!

You can find the introduction to Suwabe over here: A New Contributor to Kahotan Blog: Suwabe!, and you can also take a read through her first post on the blog which was put up yesterday! ⇒ Phat Company’s Rin Shibuya!

Anyway, today I’m going to be introducing everyone to Chan-shuu! A member of the Good Smile Company team for a good six years now! ★

================================

A senior in the planning team with a fresh personality and unknown age. His sparkling eyes are excellent at recreating the transformation scene of a certain Rider. He tends to make use of fairly old school phrases when talking but that didn’t come out much in this interview. Be sure to watch him during live broadcasts for the full experience!

* According to Kahotan

================================

(`・ヵ・) What kind of work do you do at Good Smile Company?”

(・ャ・)  “My work is separated into two main areas! The first is my position on the Product Planning Team! I’ve been in the planning team ever since I joined Good Smile Company and have worked on various Nendoroids, Nendoroid Petites, scale figures and even goods!”

(`・ヵ・)“If I’m not mistaken, the very first figure you planned was… ”

(・ャ・) “Nendoroid Menma! I still think she came out really cute to this day! But I also went a little overboard and ended up adding way too many arm parts… possibly the Nendoroid with the most arms ever!”

△ Nendoroid Menma

(`・ヵ・) “Plus The fact that Menma’s outfit has such short sleeves means that each different hand part needed to switch out the entire arm to avoid seam marks!”

(・ャ・) “At the time I wasn’t thinking much about ease of playability… I just wanted to add as many parts as possible. Ever since then I’ve been keeping both in mind whenever working on new figures.”

(`・ヵ・) “The items that you work on that stick on my mind the most are the ORANGE ROUGE items such as the Touken Ranbu -ONLINE- and Haikyuu series, but you also worked on lots of other series such as Girls und Panzer and Date A Live, correct?”

△ The recent Nendoroid Heshikiri Hasabe was the 10th Touken Ranbu Nendoroid!

(・ャ・) “That’s right! I’ve always loved figures even long before I joined GSC – from figures of cute girls to hero figures I always loved posing them and taking photos. ORANGE ROUGE reminds me a lot of when I used to take those photos as a hobby which makes it so much fun to work on!”

△ Chan-shuu in a meeting with the production team! What a lovely smile!

(・ャ・) “Chibi figures like Nendoroids were almost always female figures in my mind in the past, but nowadays male figures fit into the genre just as well! You have to try and keep the cute side as well as their cool side – something that I felt was done really nicely with Nendoroid Toru Oikawa!

(・ャ・) “The invigorating smile that seems to see right through his opponent, a fearless expression to capture his title of ‘Grand King’ and then an expression with his tongue sticking out for a bit more of the cuter side! Most Nendoroids come with three expressions, and this was one that I felt captured a nice range of the character’s personality!”

(`・ヵ・) “Which other characters have you worked on that you felt worked very well in Nendoroid form?”

(・ャ・) “Recently I would have to say that Nendoroid Hotarumaru came out great! For female characters I would have to pick Yunocchi or Umaru-chan… but there really are so many options that it’s hard to choose!

(`・ヵ・) “I’m sure you could speak on the topic for ages! But we still need to hear the second part of your work at GSC, so I’m going to have to cut you off here!”

(・ャ・) “Right! My second main job here at GSC is Release Photo Photography!”

△ Chan-shuu preparing for photos! He looks more serious than usual!

(・ャ・) “The ‘Release Photos’ refer to the product photos of the prototype that are placed on the Good Smile Company official website! I’m involved with most of the photos that you see on the site in some way or another!”

△ An example of a GSC Product Page: Nendoroid Kei Tsukishima!

(・ャ・) “I direct the angles ans posing of the figures, as well as discussing lighting and other details with the cameraman to ensure that each photo shows off the products as close to the real thing as possible! The above photo of Tsukki was taken many different times with various shadows over his face before we ended up with this one! Figure photography is so much fun!!”

△ Talking the cameraman through on where to focus!

(`・ヵ・) “You started working on photography direction from around two years ago, right?”

(・ャ・) “Yep. I always have meetings with all the other planning team members where we discuss what poses and angles we should use for the photos… those meetings always get me so passionate for the product that by the time we are actually taking the photos I can’t wait to bring out each and every little charm about them!! I sometimes think I get a little too excited…”

(`・ヵ・) “I know how you feel!!”

(・ャ・) “Seeing something I planned and helped create be transformed into images and shared around the world really makes me happy! GSC doesn’t release many robotic products so whenever the GSA products come around I always get excited when I finally get them into a certain pose that I was trying to achieve!”

△ GSA Series “New Arhan

(`・ヵ・) “I can understand you directing the photography for Nendoroids and action figures… but what happens with scale figures?”

(・ャ・) “If for example the figure was based on an illustration, we would set the lighting and angles to try and recreate the illustration as faithfully as possible. We try to limit the number of photos that we display for each product, so we need to carefully decide which angles and areas we want to show off the most!”

(`・ヵ・) “Bring out as much of the figure’s charm as possible with a limited number of photos!”

(・ャ・) “In the first place it’s quite hard to determine everything about a figure just from photos, but we definitely try our best to try and recreate the feeling of seeing that figure in person when taking the photos. We really try to ensure that none of the character or figure’s charms are left out of the photos!”

(`・ヵ・)  “You can see Chan-shuu’s photos not only on the product pages, but also on event banners and special sites like the WONDERFUL HOBBY LIFE FOR YOU!! Exhibition Gallery! ♪ Anyway, what do you have to take your mind off of work sometime? Where is your ‘mental oasis’?”

(・ャ・) “At the moment, that would be my Nendoroid Mikazuki Munechika!

△ The corner of Chan-shuu’s desk is a relaxing spot for Mikazuki! ♡

(・ャ・) “Every time I see this expression I can feel my stress levels decrease. When things get really busy I also dust him off a bit for an extra level of calm…”

(`・ヵ・)  “I see he is standing on the Nendoroid More Tatami Mat: Green!” ♪

(・ャ・) “Having the tatami mat there adds an extra special feeling to the display with hardly any extra work!”

What will Chan-shuu be writing on the blog?

(・ャ・) “I’ll be writing articles for the blog a few times a week, and most of the articles will most likely be reviews of ORANGE ROUGE items. I’ve always loved taking photos of figures and sharing them with everyone, so I’m looking forward to introducing lots of figures to everyone through the blog! I’m a little nervous, but I’m looking forward to sharing with everyone! See you all soon!!”
