AURORA & GSR Gear Special!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

Even though we’re well into October now, it’s still rather hot! I’m still yearning for some cool Autumn days to come by again!

As you might have guessed from the title of the blog, today I’ll be focusing on a set of products that have been appearing quite frequently on the GSC homepage – various pieces of cycle wear!!

At the end of the blog there is also a little figure preview!

Hamako has become my model! (The slippers don’t really suit though…)

She is wearing the Hanasaku Iroha the Movie – Home Sweet Home: Cycling Jersey (Ohana Matsumae Ver.) – but there are many more items available which you can see by taking a look at the ‘Cycle Wear’ category on the Good Smile Website!

There are only 15 products that appear when you select this option, but if you go into each of these product pages you’ll notice that every single series contains a number of different products! In total there are in fact over 70 different products in the Cycle Wear category!

The series with the most products is the Girls und Panzer series! ♡

If you consider each character jersey a separate product there are a total of twelve different products just in this single series!

Cycle Wear is one of the newer products offered by GSC, and was established this year by Station Yamada! Initially the apparel was made as a GSR product under the ‘GSR Gear’ name, and distributed by GSC! ♪

Let’s see what Station Yamada has to say about the series! ♪

\New Operations Team Summon: Station Yamada!/

(・∀・) “When I was moved to the new operations team, a team built to bring up new business opportunities, I wondered what sort of new markets we could try and enter into. As a huge fan of railroads and bicycles, I wanted to work on something related to them.”

I know that fans of railroads like taking photos of the tracks and trains, riding trains and building models of them… but what exactly do fans of bicycles do?

(・∀・) “Cyclists enjoy customizing their bicycles, or simply riding on their favorite bikes out with friends!”

I see, I see! So you wanted to work on the cycling goods as it was a connection to your own hobbies?

(・∀・) “Exactly! I also went to many cycling events myself, and often got the impression that cyclists were often anime and manga fans… so things just kind of fell into place!”

From that you decided to combine cycling goods and character goods?

(・∀・) “Yep! I had always been quite close with Morimoto-san from AURORA, and when I mentioned my ideas to expand sports apparel he was quick to jump to my side and help out!”

And thus GSR Gear was established! ♪

(・∀・) “AURORA being there and having the same dream of making the cycling world more exciting allowed us to get where we are now!”

With that said, today we’re going to take a look at some of the cycling jerseys made by AURORA! ♪

Shasha… (;`・ω・)

There we go! Finally all lined up!

There are more cycle jerseys ready to be announced soon, so keep an eyes on the GSC and AURORA sites for details! (・ω<)★

The latest news about these cycle jerseys can be found at the KASOKU x GSR Gear Development Room (‘KAZOKU’ is AURORA’s cycle wear brand!)

Dead Equine Super Set

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

I’m currently having a terrible time with my Autumn allergies… if it weren’t for the tissues by my side I don’t know what I’d do!!

That aside, today I’ll be introducing a product which is a little different to usual!

Scheduled to ship out from GSC on the 17th October:
threeA’s Dead Equine Super Set!

The figure itself is huge… but that wasn’t the first thing to impress me…
the first thing I was amazed at was the size of the box it came in!

It’s gigantic!!

It’s so huge that Hamako can sit inside the box quite comfortably!

It also allows for a rendition of the Sazae-san opening theme!

But that’s enough about the box, let’s move onto the product itself!!
Before that though, I’d like to explain a little about threeA!

What is threeA?

threeA is a company founded by world renown artist Ashley Wood and Kim Fung Wong. The company takes Ashley Wood’s creations and brings them to life by designing, developing and manufacturing everything from the actual model, the packaging, logo, setting and color scheme. Kim is in charge of the production at the company, which lets him be surrounded by the artistic wonders as much as he wants.

Products released by the company are not limited to models however – they release models, printed goods and even apparel. The quality of their products it top notch – featuring illustrations done by Ashley Wood himself, a variety of models that create a wondrous setting and are sculpted down to the finest of details – creating very realistic robots that are painted to have a unique metallic feeling to them.

They make products ranging from humanoid designs to complete robotic designs, all which come with a somewhat nostalgic, retro feeling to them and have their own story to be told. Anyone who has held a threeA figure in hand will tell you it’s enough to bring out the imagination in anyone.

This summary was taken and edited from one of Mikatan-sensei’s blogs from a little while back! Thank you Mikatan-sensei!! To put it in the words of Enon from the planning team, they’re super high quality, amazing toys! Let’s take a closer look and see just how true that is! ♪

It was too big to open at my desk so I had to move to the more open ‘Free Space’ area! Let’s get started!

Hmm… what’s this on the top? Let’s open it up first! ★

A double-sided poster is included with the figure!

A completely unexpected bonus! Yay!! (*´▽`*)

Let’s move on and remove the top section of packaging… where we find the… Blind Cowboy!

Taken out from his box!

His clothes are made from real fabric and the unique coloring of threeA products looks just as amazing as ever! Not to mention the details all over – even the smallest of parts! ε=(。・д・。)

The ‘damaged’ look is done so very well! (*´Д`)

The guns in each holster can be taken out and displayed beside him…

…and he can also hold them in his hands! (σ・∀・)σ

A dual-wielding cowboy ready for some shoot-outs!! ♪

His left hand has an alternate open hand useful for certain poses! ☆

Talking about poses…
It’s super easy to create really cool poses!

Here I’ve posed him taking cover in his very own packaging! His arms and legs, neck, torso and hips are all easily posable! I don’t think my poses even do him justice! It’s really such a pleasure to move the joints around – they slip right into place! ♪

But… the packaging is still rather big and heavy…
Let’s see what remains in the box! (`・ω・´)

The cowboy’s horse!!

To be more precise, the Ghost Horse (Black Ver.)!

It’s so… heavy!! (°Д°;≡°Д°;)

I’m pretty certain that the entire figure is filled with material – there can’t possibly be any hollow parts with this weight!

This is how it looks from the back:

An angular, strong looking body-line! The photo on the GSC site covered up the horse’s face with a piece of cloth, but here is how he looks without it! ヘ(゚∀゚*)ノ
(The cloth is of course included too!)

As you’d expect from a ‘ghost’ horse, he certainly doesn’t look like something from the realm of the living… but her certainly does look amazing!!

All the bandages along his legs makes you realize what a long journey it has been… ε=(。・д・。)

The saddle on his back is actually made with a soft cushiony feeling!!

There are also a huge number of pouches… big and small, all over the horse. Each of them looks completely unique and so amazingly detailed! <●><●>

Having a figma ride on top should give everyone a good feeling for the size!

Of course the Blind Cowboy himself can also ride atop his steed!

threeA products are a treat for the eyes, but they’re also amazing to touch and feel all the different textures! ♪

The rough cloth, the brawny muscles on the ghost horse, the details on the belt, and the amazing worn-out look of his clothes… everything is made with the utmost details and care!

Dead Equine Super Set!

wooser seems happy to be reunited with Gumako and gave her a big hug!

He also had some fun with the GSC-Seijin plushies…

…and even fought against his own real-size cardboard panel!

Phew! So much action already!! (゚A゚;)

The showcases at the front entrance include figures from the Character Vocal Series, Black Rock Shooter and the Fate series!!

The figures are a bit hard to see from this distance due to the colorful wall paintwork! We also have the bonnet of the famous GSR car on display on the wall! (σ・∀・)σ

This is of course the Hatsune Miku GOODSMILE BMW that raced in 2011! You can also see the hard earned trophy beside it! ヽ(*・ω・)人(・ω・*)ノ

As most of you probably already know, the beautiful Miku was the goddess of the racing circuit once again yesterday when she won the 7th race at Autopolis – the second victory in a row following on from the Fuji Speedway race! Things are really heating up just before the Grand Prix!!

We hope everyone will keep on supporting the team! (`・ω・´)

It’s not being used at all today so it looks a little empty at the moment, but whenever there is a figure to photograph a special background is set up and lighting is carefully positioned to get the best possible photos!

We’re going to go past the other similar sized meeting rooms and move onto the bigger Blue Meeting Room! ヘ(゚∀゚*)ノ

This room is for larger meetings such as anime production meetings or WonFes meetings!

wooser’s imitation of Gendou Ikari!!
(Although his arms are a little too short for the part…)

There’s quite a lot of space in here which wooser seems to like… it was quite a mission to get him out of here and into the next area!

The lovely designs on the back of the wall are by Masakatsu Sashie! But let’s move on and we’ll reach this orange line…

No shoes are allowed past this line!!

Other than the meeting rooms, the GSC Offices are strictly no shoes so everyone wears slippers! (wooser didn’t fit in the slippers, so his paws were specially allowed in for today).

But something has caught his eye… he suddenly dashed down the walkway!

The Tokyo Skytree!!

Metal Bars…?

Yep… the Skytree is actually too close to the GSC Office building… you can’t really see the whole thing when looking out the window! (´;ω;`)ブワッ

If you duck down and look upward you can still see the top through!!

Nendoroid Amy, Picktam!, Danganronpa Cycling Goods & Live Broadcast!

Hello everyone, Kahotan here! (@gsc_kahotan)

Whenever I’m feeling a little down I always start lip-syncing to songs while walking home at night. It really cheers me up, and if anyone comes around you simply need to face down and they’ll never even know!

But anyway, today I have a couple of things to introduce to everyone so let’s get started! There is also a live broadcast announcement at the end of the blog!

First up I’d like to take a look at…
Nendoroid Amy!

From the anime series ‘Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet’ comes a Nendoroid of the energetic heroine of the series, Amy! She comes with two different smiling expressions to really bring out her cheerful and energetic personality.

Other optional parts include the ‘kite’ glider she uses on her deliveries, the Hideauze flute that Ledo made as well as the Grace, the squirrel who always keeps her company – various parts to help recreate your favorite scenes from the series!

I know many of you have been waiting for this ever since her unpainted prototype was revealed – apologies for the wait! She is the adorable character designed by none other than Hanaharu Naruko-sensei!

The Hideauze flute and bag look lovely!

Everything has such intricate detail!

(・∀・) “The reason for that is that the publisher worked directly with us to help get her perfect!”

Today we’re joined by Yassan from the planning team!

(・∀・) “We worked closely with them to ensure she came out as a Nendoroid of ‘Hanaharu Naruko’s Amy’, even in Nendoroid form!”

The slightest changes in color and smallest details on the accessories were all carefully checked by the publisher!

The story, world and battles were definitely a big part of Gargantia for me, but the bright colors used for the characters, the pretty sea and amazing effects made it beautiful and even more amazing to watch! ♡

(・∀・) “We had to put a lot of thinking into how to get the colors of Grace to come out nicely! The planning team, manufacturing team and publisher would all come together to discuss things like this to help create the best product possible! The meetings were also rather fun and memorable!”

That’s a lot of people to be coming together to all add their input! (。・д・。)

If you remove her cape you can see she is actually rather well endowed!

(・∀・) “They’re not too big, but they’re just the right size for fans to know they’re there!”

Let’s have a look at the reverse side of the Nendoroid!

Her skirt is a little dangerously short… I had to take care with the photos while still trying to show off a bit of skin!! (。・ω・)ノ゙

(・∀・) “The skirt was adjusted to help show off her curves a little better!”

The curves on her bottom are rather lovely… I highlighted them a bit for everyone!

Aren’t they lovely?!

Plus she comes with this amazing option part – her glider!

It’s actually bigger than you might think! I put a 1 yen coin next to it to try and give you a better idea for the size! She comes with special arm parts to pose her gliding through the air!

Posed as if someone’s calling out to her as she flies through the clouds!

Something like, “Amy! Take this too please!!” as she’s about to fly off!

Let’s she how she looks with some other flying Nendoroids!☆

A rather unique grouping of characters! (・ω< )!

It can be a lot of fun to pose characters fro different series together like this!

The alternate expressions will be revealed for the first time tomorrow!
There are a total of 8 to collect including one secret character, and will have early sales on the 2nd and 3rd of November at AGF2013! You’ll even get a little bonus if you purchase a box of 8 – more details about this will be revealed shortly, so keep you eyes open!

My Final Goodbyes! Thanks For 7 Great Years! ヽ(・ω・)ノ

Hi everyone! Mikatan here! (・ω・)ノ

Once again, a big thank you to everyone who watched the WonFes Live Broadcast!! It was certainly a tiring day, but it only comes around once a year so I hope everyone who watched was able to enjoy themselves!
I spent the whole day sleeping yesterday and I’m still a little tired out.

As announced during the evening section of the WonHobby broadcast, I’ll be moving on from my position at Good Smile Company. There is no major reason for this, I simply know that the company will do great without me, and I wish to push on with my own strength. Of course I’ve always been doing the best I can, but the reason I’ve been able to do so is all the support I’ve received from those around me. I was always able to look ahead without any worries as I knew others would pick up the pieces. But I’ve decided the time has come for me to start running alone – I actually feel bad for all those that have watched over me all this time!

I wanted to write this final blog with nothing more than a ‘Thanks to everyone!’ kind of message but I decided that just wouldn’t be me, so let me write go on as if this was any other blog instead!!

This was the very first photo on the blog!

Who would have thought the first photo on the blog of a figure company would have been food? 😛 The blog was originally planned to go on for just half a year, but it ended up going on for so much longer!

The first product I ever reviewed!

Nendoroid Saber Alter! All the way back at Nendoroid #13!! (((゚Д゚)))

By the way, the first WonFes that I took part in was the one where Neko-Arc (Nendoroid #00) was first sold! The debut of the Nendoroid series!! To be there at the very start and then see the series all the way through to #358 is such an amazing feeling… (*´∀`*)

The very last product I reviewed!

The 1/8th scale Rin Shibuya! Up for preorder now!! (My last bit of advertising!) Looking at the difference of the two photos here shows just how much figures have improved… as well as how much my photography skills have improved! It’s been six years since the blog started… I can hardly believe it myself! (((゚Д゚)))

As my final blog, I wish to leave behind messages to various people. They’re all personal messages unrelated to the company, but I figure my last post would allow for this selfish post!

To all the publishers:
A big thank you for watching over me all these years. I’m sure that you’ve been upset with some of my raunchy photos, spelling errors and other mistakes a number of times – but you were always kind enough to let these things slide, and I can’t show my appreciation enough for that. Whenever I saw requests like ‘Please put this on Mikatan Blog’ or ‘Don’t worry about having us check it, we trust you!’ I was always more happy than you can possibly imagine! I am very, very grateful to every single one of you. Thank you.

Twotop-san & Miura-san:
GSC participates in a lot of events, and you are always there supporting the events no matter what! (and I know you will continue to do so!). In fact, you were even with us all the way back when we had no idea what we were doing at the first WonHobby broadcast ever. Thank you so much for all the help you’ve given over the years! You’re both friends and reliable teammates and I thank you for taking care of me whenever things got tough. Jyunichi-san, thank you for always smiling and giving us playful jokes whenever they were needed most – I truly admire you. Kegasawa-san, you were always there watching from the recording booth, and I’ve been saved by your gentle smile a number of times. I know you’ll continue to support GSC events for many years to come!

To all the staff:
I’ve asked the impossible of everyone so many times, and every single time I’ve always been told ‘Let’s do it.’, filling my heart with happiness. Asking something as simple as “Do you think I can do this on the blog?” was more often than not met with a simple “Go for it! If there’s a problem we’ll just apologize!” – those conversations really gave me a confidence boost. Not to mention all the help that goes on behind the scenes of the live broadcasts! Back when I joined the company there were hardly any staff members, and as I’ve seen the numbers grow I’ve also seen the possibilities grow. I hope you’ll all continue to challenge yourselves and know that I’ll be one of Good Smile’s biggest fans for many years to come, watching over all the latest developments!

To all the blog readers and broadcast watchers:
Thank you. There really is nothing more for me to say. Thank you all so, so much!

I wish there was some sort of test for just how grateful I am – something like a litmus test, but instead the color changes based on how thankful you are – I know it would show the highest level of thankfulness from me!!

This blog has made a lot of errors and used some rather improper language at times, but everyone has always simply laughed it off with a ‘She did it again!’ and told me it was nothing to worry about. I’ve been saved by everyone’s kind words a number of times. Even in times when I’ve felt down, simply reading through the comments on Twitter were often enough to cheer me up and get me through the day. Just reading through some comments have literally made me shed tears of happiness in the past.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with me to the very end… but it’s time for me to move on! Tomorrow the blog will be taken over by Kahotan, and I trust that everyone will show her the same love you’ve always shown me! She’s a wonderful hardworking person and she deserves the same warm treatment I was lucky enough to receive from everyone reading this! (*´∀`*)

But that’s all for today!
I’m sure that someday, sometime we shall meet again!! (・∀・)ノ゛

Jargon in the Figure Industry: Part 3

Part 3 of this series has finally arrived!

Jargon in the Figure Industry!!

It seems there are quite a few of you out there who enjoy learning about these things, so on the days that I can’t get hold of any prototypes or release samples, I’ll continue to write up some relatively easy to understand terms in the figure industry! If you missed part one and two, you can find them below!

– Part 1 –
mikatan.goodsmile.info/en/2013/05/01/jargon-in-the-figure-industry/

– Part 2 –
mikatan.goodsmile.info/en/2013/05/08/jargon-in-the-figure-industry-part-2/

This time I’ve also included a difficultly meter with stars! (★)

I’ve also added this meter to all the previous posts! The more simple the term the less stars it has, while the complex terms will have lots of stars! Of course these were all just decided by me, so don’t take them to heart too much!

Today’s lecturer is once again Tori Bird!

He’s been appearing on the blog far too often recently, so I decided to cover him up with a GSC face this time! 😛 Thanks for your time as always, sensei!! (`・ω・´)

Just like last time, all the explanations are filtered by the Mikatan filter, so anything that’s too complex has been left out, but all the important info is still in tact! If you’re a part of the industry and think something isn’t quite explained right, let me know!

Figures included with games or DVDs fall under this category.

OEM Product Examples: Nendoroid Yukari Tamura, Nendoroid Ryofuko-chan OVA Ver., Nendoroid Petite Hatsune Miku Christmas Piano Cake Ver and many more!

R ★★☆☆☆

The ‘R’ is the outer curve that expands outward, referring to both the curves of the sculpt and the paint curves on eyes. The opposite is ‘reverse-R’, which refers to curves that bend inward.

Example Use: “While you’re making changes, try bring out this R a little more.”

Tabs ★★☆☆☆

The bumps the connect into holes in order to connect different parts together. Also known as ‘pins’ or simply ‘connectors’.

Example Use: ‘Let’s put the tab on the hand and the hole on the gun!’ or ‘The tab connected nice and firmly!’

Insertion [Insaato] ★★★☆☆

Another term that refers to the making of parts that connect one section of a figure to another, but are made from a separate material to ensure it does not change shape or become loose. This is most frequently done by placing a brass wire in the leg or other part of a figure, allowing for a very firm attachment to the base.

They’re similar to tabs in a sense, but tabs are made from the same material as the figure and are more about the ‘shape’, while insertion is more of a ‘process’ to stabilize the connection.

Products Using Insertion: 1/8th Scale Ultimate Madoka, Homura Akemi: you are not alone (exchangeable head), etc.

Tooling ★★★★★

Tooling refers to product made after the adjustments are done at the factories in China in order to transform the prototype into a mould for mass production. This comes before the previously mentioned T1, T2, etc…. These adjustments are necessary to ensure that the final product can come out of the Injection Moulding Machine without problems.

Extra Info) Before the tooling is done, the two parts on the left here are sent to the factory in China. The far left is a direct copy of the prototype and is used to create an initial mould. The second one is then made from that mould, after some adjustments have been made to ensure there are no gaps between the parts. This is then further adjusted and fixed up and the final version, which them becomes the ‘tooling’. This tooling is then sent to the manufacturing and production teams at GSC, where it is carefully checked to ensure that the sculptwork is still all in tact after the changes.

So much work goes into perfecting just a single mould!

Example Use: “The tooling has come back from China!”

Contrapposto ★★★★☆

A representation of a body pose with an asymmetrical balance of the central weight line in order to make it appear more dynamic, or alternatively relaxed. Posing figures such as figmas while keeping this concept in mind will result in very beautiful poses!

Example Use: “The contrapposto is really effective on this figure!”

EDM ★★★★★

An acronym for ‘Electric Discharge Machine’. This is a machine that takes 3D data and carves a 360 degree version of it, then by a series of rapidly recurring currents it melts copper into the shape of this carving in order to create a mould out of it.

When making a mould through the standard method of casting, it’s necessary to move the prototype a couple of times to get to all the areas, which is frequently a cause of problems. Using an EDM gives a very detailed, problem-free mould!

Figures using an EDM: Nendoroid Kamui Kobayashi’s Helmet

MYB (Miura’s Personal Vocab) ★★★★★

Short for ‘Maji Yaba Bonbaa’, it basically means that something is in a really bad situation, and not much can be done about it.

Example Use: “That date of delivery is MYB! It’s insane!!”

That’s all for today! ヽ(゚∀゚)ノ

But there is still much more to come!!

The EDM sounds like an amazing machine!! (`・ω・´)

I’ve never seen it for myself, but just thinking about a machine that melts copper down and creates a mould is incredible in itself… but to think that it first sculpts out a 360 degree model is rather intriguing! I’m quite interested to find out what exactly the difference is compared to a 3D printer – I’ll be sure to find out and report at a later stage!

But that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!! (・∀・)ノ゛

Minicchu IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls 02

Takamatsu from Phat! Company has an army of Sachikos!
001
I know I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money on Cinderella Girls (to the point that it’s painful to think about :P), but I’m nowhere near the levels of Otanaka and Takamatsu! Those two truly adore their idols!!

As a side note, Takamatsu is a Passion-type player just like me! One of my rare comrades in the IDOLM@STER world!! His favorite idol is Sachiko Koshimizu!

It’s not hard to see why… Sachiko is so cute! I love her too!! (*´∀`*)
002
Phat! Company’s:
Minicchu IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls 02

From the popular social game ‘IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls’ comes a second set of idols based on the adorable illustrations of Kengou Yakumo, here to join the chibi Minicchu series of figures from Phat! Company.

The second set includes Airi Totoki and Ranko Kanzaki, the two idols who were voted most popular in the first and second Cinderella Girl Elections respectively. The others in the set include Mika Jougasaki, Rika Jougasaki, Uzuki Shimamura, Sachiko Koshimizu, Koume Shirasaka and one secret character for a total of 8 different idols to collect!

The second set is just as amazing as the first!

I really think that Phat! Company’s Minicchu figures are an incredibly well-made series! Plus they only cost ¥680 each! For the amount of detail that you get on these figures, that price is incredibly cheap in my opinion!

There are another 8 idols to collect, including one secret character!

Each time you buy a single figure you won’t know who is inside until it’s been opened up! It’s so much fun to see who you’ll get! Alternatively you can order a larger box of 9 figures – I recommend this to anyone who wants to get the whole set all at once! (・ω・)ノ
003
This is how they look from the back!

Aaah! Just look how cute Totokin’s hair looks from the back! It’s super cute! (She is 2nd from the left on top). Ranko’s twirly twin tails also look great! The most amazing thing about the Minicchu series is the intricate sculptwork and painting, even though the figures are small!

I can’t even imagine how much work will be needed to get each of these figures mass produced!! They’re so finely detailed! Try and pay attention to all the smallest of details as I take a closer look at the idols in this set!
004
Passion Type: Rika Jougasaki!

A picture together with her Nendo Petite counterpart!

Comparing the heights, you can see the Minicchu is about two thirds the size of the Nendo Petite – they’re so tiny!! Nendoroid Petites certainly are adorable, but the Minicchu series has a different kind of cuteness – they give the characters even more of a childish charm! I can’t help but crack a smile when I see their cute expressions!

The Rika Jougasaki Minicchu also comes with a rhinoceros beetle to display alongside her, or with anyone else!
005
The other Passion types:
Airi Totoki and Mika Jougasaki!

Totokin is so adorable!! She’s too cute!! I remember that I started playing Cinderella Girls just as Totokin was voted into first place during the first Cinderella Girl elections, and the ‘Cinderella Girl’ capsules were released in the game. I couldn’t believe how cute she was when I first saw her… (´∀`)

Of course I love Mika as well though! I have all her cards in the game!!
006
Next up we have the Cool types:
Ranko Kanzaki and Koume Shirasaka!

Ranko was voted as the top idol in the 2nd Cinderella Girl elections! Have a look at the detail on her outfit and expression – it’s almost unbelievable!! I’ve zoomed in almost too much so it’s quite hard to tell, but if you look close you can see the ribbons on her sleeves and the front of her outfit – and they are each individually painted! Normally when there are such tiny parts on figures they’re just simplified and made a single color… but not this time!

Plus I know that the Cool-type players have been eagerly awaiting Koume-chan! The shadow under her eye is so cute! If you remove her front hair parts you can actually see her with both eyes open!!
007
Finally we have the Cute types:
Sachiko Koshimizu and Uzuki Shimamura!

Sachikooooo!! Just look at that triumphant expression on her face! She only got 4th place in the 2nd elections, however within the GSC offices she is really popular even with the Passion and Cool-type players! Stop being so cute Sachiko! Takamatsu’s wallet can’t handle it anymore! 😛

We also have Shimamura-chan in her fairly standard looking school uniform – but although it has a simplistic look the detail is still incredible. The school emblem and inner-side of the blazer, not to mention the chequered skirt are just as amazingly detailed as all the other idols!

008

Displayed with the Minicchu IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls 01!
The first set should be on sale soon! (`・ω・´)

The release date of the first set has unfortunately been delayed a little bit – sorry to everyone who has been waiting! They’ll be ready to move into your homes soon!!

This is actually the second set’s prototypes lined up together with actual product samples of the first set, and you can’t tell the difference at all! It’s amazing how well they’ve come out!

In just a bit you should be able to head to your local store and pick up the first set… while also putting in your preorder for the second!! ヽ(゚∀゚)ノ

Dealing with Stickiness on Figures!

I have once again recieved an interesting mail!

Hello! My name is Tii!
I love reading your blog. ^^The other day I finally managed to find and buy Nendoroid Totori after searching for ages! I took her home and opened the box filled with anticipation…. only to find the surface of the figure was all sticky and gross! I guess that because the figure is a few years old, it kind of melted down into the base materials of the figure?

I really want to take her out the box and play with her, but she’s all sticky… is there someway to get around this? (´・_・`)!

I’ve had this experience before!! Σ(゚Д゚;)

When figures are left for a long amount of time, that sticky layer will often develop on the surface of them! I hope there is some kind of solution…
o0515045412580975795
Let’s check with Tori Bird from the manufacturing team!!

He was the one who made Nendoroid Cure Blossom which was really well recieved by fans of the series! I wonder what he is working on now…!!

But his actual job isn’t the sculpting of prototypes, but in fact the mass-production of all the figures that reach everyone’s homes! (`・ω・´)

Let’s find out from him what causes the sticky figures!

(*The Mikatan filter has been applied to this explanation to try and make this as easy to understand as possible – let me know if you think something is wrong!)

o0515057612580975797
These are actually super special Mikatan business cards! Each one has my name and email address written on the reverse side – they were actually made for me around 5 years ago, when the GSC offices were still in Matsudo!

Some of them have become all sticky!! (((゚Д゚)))

It’s quite hard to tell from the photo, but I think you should be able to see from the reflecting light that there is a bit of a sticky surface. If you touch it it feels a little gooey too…

The strange thing is that even though all of them were all made at the same time, only some of them were going sticky! I wonder why…?

– Cause of Stickiness –The reason the figures become sticky is because of the plasticizer used when making them. This plasticizer is added to the PVC (the main material used in figures) in order to make it softer – the more mixed in with the PVC, the softer and more flexible it becomes.

However, over a long period of time this plasticizer vaporizes, and when this happens while a figure is sealed up in it’s box the vaporized plasticizer has nowhere to go, and thus sticks onto the surface of the figure creating a sticky layer.

Curse you, plasticizer!! (*`Д´)

But the truth is that I shouldn’t be mean to the plasticizer – it’s the reason we have flexible figure parts on our figures, and it’s apparently also used in order to get hard PVC parts like Nendoroid expressions out of their molds neatly! In other words, the plasticizer is a very important part of figures!

Although I’m also told that there is currently research going on to make soft, flexible parts without the need for plasticizers! The factories in China are constantly using the latest techniques, so let’s hope that this can also be put into practice soon! (((゜Д゜)))

– How to Prevent the Stickiness –・ Don’t leave figures in the sun for long periods of time. (This causes the plasticizer to vaporize faster)

・ Don’t leave figures in sealed boxes for too long. (This includes leaving them in the blister packs!)

It seems simple enough, yet I know it’ll be hard!!(゚Д゚;)

I’m sure I can be sure to keep my figures out of the sunlight, but when it comes to the figures in boxes… I have so many of those at the moment!!

But it’s definitely best to open up the boxes and blister packs and let the figure breathe if you really want to prevent the stickiness!

– How to Remove the Stickiness –Make use of a mild washing liquid – the same you’d use to clean things like eating utensils. Note that I can’t guarantee that this method will work for all figures, and there may be unexpected problems or damage to your figures.

You’ll see that I have tested a few methods below, but please keep that in mind that everything you try on your figures is your own responsibility!

(1) Clean with some bubbly washing liquid!

o0515042312580975799

Making use of a sponge or brush might damage the figures – it’s best to gently wash it with your hands instead!

This should remove any light stickiness from the figure! When you’re wiping off the water after washing, be sure to use a soft cloth instead of tissues.

The reason for this is that if any stickiness is left behind, the tissues will end up sticking to the figure!

(2) Soak the figure in diluted washing liquid!

o0515048312580975798

Left Side: 10 Parts Water – 1 Part Washing Liquid
Right side: Bubbled up washing liquid

I tried leaving the figure parts in each of these for 12 hours! The results…
Left Side: Almost all the stickiness came off!
Right Side: The bubbles all died away after a few hours.

I really wanted to try the right side method even though Bird told me it wouldn’t work… he was right. 😛

I think that overall, the best method is to first soak it in left hand liquid from (2) and then wash it with bubbles and hands as in (1). One thing to note is that the smell of the cleaning agent might cling to the figure a bit, so if you’re sensitive to smells you might want to keep that in mind!

(3) Clean with a Scouring Liquid/Cream (Caution!)

I used this method on some expression parts and it seemed to work very well at getting rid of the stickiness! The problem with this is that these cleaning liquids usually include an abrading agent which have a very high chance of damaging your figure! They’ll also likely remove the shine on any glossy figures.

It’s not a method I recommend, but it certainly works at getting the stickiness off and having a very clean figure! Whatever you do though, don’t try to clean them using scouring powder, as that will almost definitely damage the figure!
o0515050412580975796
I tried cleaning one for myself! (`・ω・´)

My GSC Seijin is all nice and clean now!

W-Wow…! The stickiness is completely gone and he looks just as good as new! I can once again give him to someone without being embarrassed about it!!

Figures, like all other things, will unfortunately get damaged or break – nothing can last forever! But you can certainly do a lot of things to make your figures last longer – taking a few steps to make your figures last a bit longer really shows your love for them! ヽ(゚∀゚)ノ

I’m sure a lot of you have a few figures that are sleeping safely in boxes somewhere – at some stage when you have the time, consider opening up their boxes and giving them a little air. The other day I opened up all my older boxes and it was actually great fun to remember all the old figures!
Anyway, that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!! (・∀・)ノ゛

The Good Smile Cup Figure/Model Contest #2! (Built from Scratch Category)

The Good Smile Cup Figure/Model Contest #2!

Today we’ll finally take a look at the final category!! (`・ω・´)
013
The ‘Built from Scratch’ category!

That means that everything we take a look at today has been made from the ground up! They were all sculpted through the love of their creators!!

Obviously this was the most difficult of any of the categories – but it was also the category with the most entries this time around! Although I suppose that should be expected from a figure making company! ヽ(゜∀゜)ノ

Anyway, before we get started, here are some links to the previous categories in case you missed them!

That brings us to the end of this year’s Good Smile Cup Figure/Model Contest entries!!

A big thanks and congratulations to all the staff members who entered! The entries were all great!! They’re also still on display at the office entrance, and I even saw some guests placing votes the other day which made me all happy inside! (*´∀`*)

I’m fairly certain that nothing in here will ever actually have the chance to become a product, but if there is something you really like let me know via mail or twitter and I’ll let the creators know! (I’m sure they’ll be happy to hear it!). I also hope this little series has made a few more people a little more interested in the more do-it-yourself section of the hobby world!

I must say that I’m really looking forward to next year’s entries!!

Finally, a quick notice!! ヽ(゚∀゚)ノ

Making things of your own is a lot of fun, but so is taking photographs of your favorite figures…
